The cursed swamp

My memories of those times are not as clear as I would like them to be; perhaps because of the number of years that have passed or because my mind blocked some unpleasant memories of my childhood. However, with the little that remained engraved in my mind, I am going to tell you what happened to me at the nona's house, that full moon night.

Let me put it in context. As a child, mom used to drop us off at grandma's house, who lived in a rural area on the outskirts of the city. Behind the humble house was a large mango tree, from which roads branched off into a swamp that divided my grandparents' property and a farm where they raised cattle.

Sometimes, when my brothers bothered them, the cows would cross the pool, plunging almost completely into the mud and then chasing us up to the big mango tree where we took refuge, climbing to the top.

However, some afternoons while my brothers rested, I liked to wander along those tree-lined paths, always ending up in front of the swamp, where I would sit and watch the neighboring cattle feeding.

A jet-black bull would always come close to where I was; he would dip half his body and stop to stare at me with his big, piercing eyes, while I would say: "You are the reincarnation of my grandfather", although at that age I didn't know what that word meant and besides, my grandfather was alive at that time.

I have a vague memory of the last afternoon I went into that swamp; that day I was caught in the afternoon chasing a swarm of dragonflies that flitted along the path to the swamp. It was almost nightfall and by the time I reached the bank where I used to sit the cattle were no longer in the adjacent meadows. But, I could see on the surface of the swamp some long, sharp horns sticking out of the mud.

I was petrified as I watched to see if my reincarnated bull would come out to greet me or if he had drowned; but my mind and body sensed that something sinister was happening. My heart began to pound, and a ringing in my ears took me out of focus from the present time. I heard footsteps behind me and turned instinctively. Two large, bovine hoof-like footsteps were marked in the mud just behind me, but nothing and no one was there.

I recoiled in panic, and the footsteps advanced in my direction. I immediately turned around and ran as hard as I could without looking back, while a troop of footsteps chased me closely about to catch me, it was like the sound of a cavalcade in hunting times.

I ran into my grandmother's house and took refuge between her legs, bursting into tears, but unable to utter a word. My grandmother, seeing the terror in my huge eyes, hugged me tightly, and without asking me anything, with a shudder on her lips, she said to me:

Shiiiiiiiiii, shiiiiiiiiii... calm my child, you are safe now. With me nothing bad can happen to you, but for God's sake, stop going to that damned swamp!

HISPALITERARY CHALLENGE 10: Swamps"

... a field of stones to plow; a swamp, a wasteland; a rugged space to which they will have to sow life through a story.

The story must take place in either a swamp or a desert. The character must be running away from something.

Sort:
