Hello to the members of the hive community!

I want to share my thoughts on the book that I've recently read which is Kung Alam N'yo Lang by Ricky Lee. This story delves into the various emotions and relationships that people experience. It illustrates how love, loss, and unspoken words can impact our lives. Ricky Lee enables us to grasp how our shared experiences and the stories we hold within ourselves shape our identities and influence our perceptions of others.

Translation starting from descending order: When God is Missing, The Dance of Letters, Inggo and the Santo Kuwatro, When Death is Tired

The book is composed of a collection of stories that shares the lives of ordinary Filipinos and their struggles, dreams, and relationships. Each story is unique yet interconnected, illustrating how people’s lives intertwine in unexpected ways. The book addresses real-life challenges such as love, family issues, and social concerns in a manner that feels genuine and relatable. The title, which translates to If Only You Knew, reflects the hidden emotions and truths that people carry. Through his creative and heartfelt storytelling, The author offers readers a deeper understanding of life and the experiences of others.

Kamatayan (Death) Illustrated by Ivan Reverente

One of the most intriguing characters in the book is Kamatayan, or Death. Rather than the typical portrayal of Death as frightening, Kamatayan is depicted here as a quiet observer who follows the characters’ journeys. Instead of being a villain, Kamatayan serves as a reminder of life’s brevity, encouraging both the characters and readers to reflect on their choices. A memorable moment occurs when Kamatayan accompanies a young man (Monty) mourning the loss of his family. Without uttering much, Kamatayan aids him in confronting his pain and beginning to comprehend his emotions. This distinctive portrayal of Kamatayan adds depth to the stories, illustrating the connection between life and death. It also teaches readers to cherish time and relationships, as nothing lasts forever.

POV of Kamatayan once he found Monty (Elderly Man)

The way Ricky Lee writes is another reason the book is so captivating. His words are simple yet powerful, allowing readers to feel the emotions of the characters. Sad and poignant moments are particularly well-crafted, such as when an elderly man reflects on his life while seeing Kamatayan. He shares his regrets and the things he wished he wanted to do to him when he was a child, creating a scene that prompts readers to contemplate their own lives. Simultaneously, the book balances its serious moments with warmth and humor, making the stories feel authentic. However, some sections may feel heavy or sad, so it’s best to read it when you’re prepared for deep and emotional narratives. There are also characters whose stories lack clear endings, which might leave readers wondering what happens next.

"But we know that when a person is gone, what we always remember, what we always talk about, are only the good things." - Lee, R. (2016). Kung Alam N’yo Lang. Triprint Corporation.

Overall, Kung Alam N’yo Lang is a book that will inspire readers to reflect on life, relationships, and the value of time. The stories feel genuine, and the characters are easy to connect with, especially Kamatayan, who provides a fresh and thought-provoking perspective on life and death. This book is ideal for readers who appreciate meaningful stories and want to learn more about Filipino culture and experiences. If you’re seeking a book that will evoke feelings, provoke thought, and help you appreciate the little things in life, Kung Alam N’yo Lang is an excellent choice. I would rate it 9/10 for its beautiful storytelling and unforgettable characters.
