After suffering the consequences of the King of Hybern and losing much in the war caused by him, Nesta Archeron has been more broken than expected, her trauma has led her to withdraw from everyone, even more than she had always been. Whatever was developing between Cassian and her was a thing of the past, at least for her.

Submerged in a vortex of self-destruction, Nesta spends her days going from bar to bar, getting drunk every day, gambling all her money and sleeping with strangers, until her family made the decision to intervene and force her to change and value her life, starting by training with Cassian.

What will be the result, will it work or is it just a waste of time

I'm talking about the fifth book in the A Court of Roses and Thorns saga by author Sarah J. Maas, who has won my deep love and made me addicted to her fantasy novels.

This book has been no exception, however, while reading it, I felt a mixture of love and hate for Nesta.

I'll explain. Nesta has been a very hateful character, very arrogant, and she always treated the people who care about her the most badly, especially her sister Feyre, and Cassian. I always thought she didn't deserve how nice they were to her. She was just obnoxious and it was kind of strange for me to read a book where I didn't like the main character. But this book is more complex than that.

The focus of this book is on Nesta's redemption. In how she faces her traumas, in how she accepts them and fights against her worst demons, against her worst enemy who is herself.

This book is a story of overcoming and redemption. And I liked the way the story was constructed and unfolded. We see how Nesta takes steps forward, but also how she takes steps backward because like everything in life, processes are not always linear.

So from hating Nesta, let's start to understand her, and then to sympathize with her, because not everything is black and white, but also gray.

But honestly, I don't justify her actions at all. I understand that she was going through a trauma but I don't justify her because there are always choices and belittling or hurting someone who has always been there for you doesn't seem like the easiest or right choice.

On the other hand, this book also touches on female empowerment and female friendship in a territory where the only ones who "should" fight and train are men, and for a woman to do so is a sign of mockery and shame.

But in the midst of all her imperfections Nesta firmly believes in feminine power and together with her two friends, Emerie and Gwyn become Valkyries. I found that amazing.

The process of becoming a Valkyrie was not just about making your body strong but there had to be a balance between brute strength and mental strength. In fact, there is a phrase from the Valkyries that Nesta repeated to herself whenever she needed strength and felt her mind overcame her:

I am the rock against which the waves crash. Nothing can break me.

I think we should all repeat that phrase to ourselves when we feel we can't go on any longer.

I can't fail to mention that I firmly believe that Nesta's evolution might not have taken place or at least not as fast if he hadn't had Cassian's support. There is no man more patient than him, because anyone would have given up on helping someone who only hurts those who try to help him.

Maybe I'm being too blunt but I think sue Nesta didn't deserve Cassian.

But all in all, I thought it was an amazing book. It is without a doubt, a very good book. We had two situations: Nesta's trial and the search for three objects that are needed to stop a possible war started by the human queens. So we also have a bit of action here.

Of course there are still things to resolve about the other characters and I look forward to the next book.

I haven't enjoyed a fantasy saga this much in a long time. Fantasy, action, romance. If you like that mix, you should l read it.

Great review as usual! When you said you haven't enjoyed fantasy in a long time, I share the sentiment. These days I am trying to rekindle my relationship with books and it's been challenging. But the other day, I came across a new non-fiction author and loved it. I think i'll go back making book review soon :)

Hi, @macchiata! thank you very much. I'm glad you liked the review. I've actually made peace with my love of reading this year, and it felt great to get back to obsessing over books. Fantasy was my first love and this reunion makes me happy haha.

I would love to know about that book you mention. I hope you can do a review ❤️❤️❤️

I heard amazing reviews about the ACOTAR series and decided to start reading it. I'm on the first book and I can tell you, I DON'T like this Nesta character. I assumed after the first book, the author would be done with her. Haha. Alas, I have to meet her in almost all the books and befriend her in the fifth! 😄

Interesting review. Well done! !LADY 🙂

Hahahaha I hated Nesta. Nowadays I don't love her 100% but I don't hate her anymore. The truth is that ACOTAR is an excellent fantasy saga. I love it.

I'm glad you liked the review! Thanks 🩵🩵🩵

Love me some Sarah Maas novels. I thought this one was good but they've gotten a little overly graphic with the sex scenes. I liked the first 2 in the series better.

I feel you 😅😅 Book 2 is my favorite of all

I think the next book will be about Elaine. I'm curious to see if the author will come up with some reason for Feyre to be indisposed in this next one too.

I also think it will be about Elain and I hope he stays with Azriel 😅😅.

There are a lot of things that would be left undeveloped. I for one would like to know more about Mor and a pov tamlin
