February is the month of love and friendship. Funny, it is also the shortest month of the year. I don't know if there is a connection there. Anyway, even though it has not been on my reading agenda for this year, I will start by giving you my sudden comments on a masterpiece by Anton Chekhov: The Lady with the Little Dog.
I am amazed at how such a short story explores with beautiful prose and intelligence and depth the love that transcends from the initial hook of instinctive attraction to the sublimation of the emotional, to reach such a lofty plane, capable of disturbing the very soul. Well, please excuse my lightness in cataloging the book as a story; in reality, it is a tale about such a universal and current theme as love.
I confess: “The Lady with the Little Dog” is my first reading of Chekhov: a distinguished Russian short-story writer and playwright of the Czarist era (second half of the 19th century). Perhaps, it is not his most refined and celebrated writing; I don't know. But undoubtedly, as I wander among his lines, I can affirm the captivating brilliance of writing anchored in the every day and of a deceptive banality. In truth, upon breaking it down, one does not remain undaunted by its relevance to human dramas related to love.
Since it is so short, at almost 7,000 words, it would be a complete disservice on my part if I were to tell you about the drama between Gurov and Anna, the main characters. However, by way of prodding, it will suffice to tell you that it deals with the tensions between love and passion, the effects of dissatisfaction in marriage, convenience, infidelity, the struggle between desire and reality, personal transformation, dealing with loneliness, and the search for connection. In addition, the pertinence of the scenarios gives strength to the story. As in any good story, nothing is left loose, at random. Even the lady's little dog plays a symbolic role if you think about it.
I assume that being a classic in the public domain, you will have no obstacles to accessing a version in your language. In Spanish, there are many good translations such as L. Kúper and J. López Morillas; although I read the one by Víctor Gallego Ballestero and illustrated by Javier Zabala. In English, among those recommended is the one by C. Garnett and Ivy Litvinov.
Do I recommend it? A resounding yes. It is, at most, fifteen pages loaded with human experience that could resonate very closely with you. A read that is perfectly suited to the pace of modernity, where the urgent and immediate prevails; however, there is substance here.

Febrero, el mes del amor y la amistad. Curioso, también es el mes más corto del año. No sé si habrá una conexión en esto. De todas maneras, a pesar de no haber estado en mi agenda de lecturas para este año, comenzaré por darles mis comentarios súbitos sobre una obra maestra de Antón Chéjov: La dama del perrito.
Estoy maravillado por cómo un relato tan breve explora con bella prosa e inteligencia y profundidad el amor que trasciende del inicial enganche de la atracción instintiva a la sublimación de lo emocional, hasta alcanzar un plano tan elevado, capaz de perturbar el alma misma. Bueno, dispensen mi liviandad al catalogar el libro como relato; en realidad, es un cuento sobre un tema tan universal y vigente como lo es el amor.
Les confieso: “La dama del perrito”, es mi primera lectura de Chéjov: insigne cuentista y dramaturgo ruso de la era zarista (segunda mitad del siglo XIX). Quizás, no sea su escrito más depurado y celebrado; lo ignoro. Pero sin duda, al pasearme entre sus líneas, puedo afirmarle el brillo cautivador en una escritura anclada en lo cotidiano y de una engañosa banalidad. En verdad, al desmenuzarla, uno no queda impávido por la pertinencia en los dramas humanos relativos al amor.
Al ser tan corta, rozando las 7.000 palabras, sería un completo dislate de mal gusto de mi parte, si les contara el drama entre Gúrov y Anna, los protagonistas. No obstante, a manera de picarlos, bastará con decirles que aborda las tensiones entre el amor y la pasión, los efectos de la insatisfacción en el matrimonio, la conveniencia, la infidelidad, la lucha entre el deseo y la realidad, la transformación personal, el manejo de la soledad y la búsqueda de conexión. Además, de la pertinencia de los escenarios para dar fuerza a la historia. Como en todo buen cuento, nada queda suelto, al azar. Incluso, el perrito de la dama juega un rol simbólico, si se lo piensa bien.
Deduzco, que, al ser un clásico de dominio público, no tendrás obstáculos para acceder alguna versión en tu idioma. En español, hay muchas buenas traducciones como L. Kúper y J. López Morillas; aunque yo leí la de Víctor Gallego Ballestero e ilustrada por Javier Zabala. En inglés, entre las recomendadas, está la de C. Garnett e Ivy Litvinov.
¿Qué sí la recomiendo? Un rotundo sí. Son, a lo sumo, quince páginas cargadas de experiencia humana que podrían resonarte muy de cerca. Una lectura que se adapta a la perfección al ritmo de la modernidad, en que lo urgente e inmediato prevalece; sin embargo, aquí hay sustancia.
