Diabetes is considered a silent killer by the medical community. It earns its name because when you’re diagnosed with diabetes, it just doesn’t stop there. It could affect the way our heart, liver and brain function too. Before one is diagnosed with Diabetes, there’s a phase called the “Prediabetes” where according to Hillary Wright is the condition where blood glucose levels are higher than normal but not high enough for the person to be considered as Diabetic. While there are also genetic predispositions, our lifestyle could also pose risk especially when we live a sedentary lifestyle as well as some other risk factors such as obesity, physical inactivity, smoking and indulging in too much sugar sweetened drinks or meals. To know about our condition, there are some tests that could be done such as the Hemoglobin A1C tests FPG tests, Oral Glucose Tolerance test. The FPG (fasting plasma glucose) can be done at home these days with home testing kit. They are one of the steps to an early detection and if you do have a result above 100 milligrams per deciliter to even 125 is considered pre-diabetes and that’s when you should be wary and work reversing that and start living towards a healthier life. This is where the book comes in handy, The PreDiabetes Diet Plan by Hillary Wright, M.ed, RD has all the necessary information that a common people would want to know about diabetes and how to work on reversing their diagnosis.

The book also talks about medical implications and approach to preventing diabetes, it does not leave out the part about our psyche. Wright also offers some tips to manage our emotions to success in changing our lifestyle and behavior. When you’re tasked to change the way you eat, that isn’t something easy to do. It can feel a little overwhelming and even stressful. Wright advises in her book to also keep a food journal, avoiding overeating at night as well as being patient as it really takes time to reverse it all. In her words,

Try to accept that it probably took years to get where uou are, and that tossing out unhealthful habits and replacing them with better ones takes time.

I honestly got the book because I wanted to learn more about it. My grandma and biological father died due to diabetes complication. Now, I am also taking care of my adoptive dad who has diabetes. With all these people in my family that has them, diabetes isn’t something new to me. I witnessed horror stuff about it and that isn’t the best way to live. While my grandma could live up to 70, she remained reliant on her medication and was very active throughout her life. She did the best she could to keep her blood sugar stable and that was also a bit of work. With my adoptive dad, the diabetes affected his neurology and neuropathy along with some other complications. So, it’s pretty scary to think about that diabetes could shorted someone’s life span. By understanding how to prevent all that, I was hoping I could pass on the knowledge to someone else that might need them. This book was one of it that got me understand nutrition a lot more and helped me evaluate the things I’ve eaten throughout my weight loss journay thus far.

Anyway, if you are prediabetes, this is a great book to have as it offers some approach that can be applicable to your life. There are also ways shown to control our portion as well as food that we might have to limit if we are diagnosed with it. This book is definitely another suplement besides professional advice.

This week reads is pretty simple as I haven’t read much as I’d like last week. So, that’s why I don’t really have that many books. Next week will be a lot better as I am slowly picking up the vibe and now it’s also cozy days to read as well.

Hello, @macchiata

Thanks for your recommendation of this book on pre-diabetes. Any disease is a cause for tragedy, and diabetes is no exception. I'm sorry you had to go through the suffering of watching your loved ones suffer from it. So, to be aware of the risks is wise. Caution in a world that conspires to make us sick through food. As the ancient Greeks said, you are what you eat. In this sense, one has to take care of a diet and the physical condition. And let us not forget to take care of our spiritual nourishment through literature.

Greetings.

The greek has it right, we are definitely what we eat. Our modern lifestyle and culture has made us forget about that. There are too many temptations and there's this notion that eating healthy is expensive. The thing is, it isn't as expensive as it may seem. Being sick is a lot more expensive than taking care of our body.

Thank you for commenting and taking the time to do that.

What a coincident that I just know that I am prediabetes from my MCU and I have never know there is such book. Thanks for your recommendation..

I hope you'll find this book very useful. They are available over shoppee

Perhaps everyone should read this book, not only to save themselves but to enlighten someone else like you have done for me. Didn't think you could at least know if you're prediabetic. Actual book or e-book? Couldn't find the e-book on pdfdrive.net

I bought the pdf version of it so I assume it's somewhere over the internet for free 😄 over here we have services that sells book in pdf for cheap and it saves my time for searching the whole internet just to find the book.

Hi, Mach ... coincidentally I also have the issue of diabetes from my late father. so, our family is now more careful about food intake and diet patterns. Anw, I am very interested in reading the book. Where can I borrow the E-book legally? or where can i buy the pdf. Please.. spill the tea. Thank you

You can find it on Shopee, I forgot the link to the store but will drop it here when I can. It's a little tricky with diabetes but make sure your father is being treated and regularly check his sugar blood levels.

OMG, @macchiata . How is that possible? My father passed away in 2008 🤣. But, thanks for the info. It was very helpful. Your post is awesome.👍🏾

I am sorry to hear that! I think it's nice for you to be aware of diabetes since one of your family got them and that'll put you into a risk too.

Prevention is key when it comes to diabetes, especially if it runs in the family. With that family history you are wise to do all possible to prevent it! In some cases genetics win no matter what, but with any luck you will dodge that bullet! You've already seen the problems it causes.

It sounds like she covers many facets of the disease including the psychological which is a huge factor. Keep working on that good health and sharing what read!

With that family history you are wise to do all

Definitely, I've seen how scary things can get and it's best to prevent things before they do happen. The book was a refreshing read as usually this type of book only discuss the science aspects of it. Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment

I love and enjoy reading novels, but my mom, on the other hand, is an avid reader of different genres of books. She is a nurse and has many books about well-being. Once in a while, I read some of them.

Sadly, diabetes runs in my family.🙂

Reading books can be a great way to learn how to live a healthier lifestyle. Thanks for sharing.

Sadly, diabetes runs in my family.🙂

It's time to read book relating to this matter. Who knows you can prevent diabetes and even pre-diabetic condition. What books about wellness that you read recently? or perhaps a while back ago that caught your interest?
