The Gonzo Gospel: Writing Rebels and Literary Mavericks - Hunter S Thompson

We are all alone, born alone, die alone, and—in spite of True Romance magazines—we shall all someday look back on our lives and see that, in spite of our company, we were alone the whole way. I do not say lonely—at least, not all the time—but essentially, and finally, alone. This is what makes your self-respect so important, and I don't see how you can respect yourself if you must look in the hearts and minds of others for your happiness.”
― Hunter S. Thompson

Thompson wanna be!

Yep, that’s me. I desperately want to have the ability to write like Hunter S. Thompson. He is known as the father of Gonzo Journalism, a style of journalism that is written using the first person style and combines both factual information and also the reporter’s thoughts and views. At the same time, for the most part, it is self-satire and really fun to read. However, profanity is also the common marker of this writing style after all, that isn’t far from how Thompson would write his novels and articles.

As much as I admire Fitzgerald, Thompson is the person I wanted to be if I were to write a cultural article or a travelog style op-ed. If you haven’t read any of Thompson’s work check out Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas or The Battle Of Aspen in which Thompson tried to run for Sheriff of Pitkin County, in Colorado. I would also recommend The Rum Diary, it's a story of someone in his early 30's who felt directionless and wanted to find meaning to it.

“I was feeling the pressure to decide what to do with my life. In some ways, that was good. If you feel like you are running out of time, you tend to do something.”

The first time I read about it, I was also like the character in the story. I was in a foreign land and was directionless somehow. Perhaps, it was why the book spoke to me as well as his writing style.

I first heard his name around last year and reading his articles and book got me hooked. It spoke to me. It was like the AHA moment where I found a person I wanted to be growing up when it comes to being a writer.

The writings of Thompson are certainly off beat and it was as if he lived in another universe. Perhaps, the drugs and alcohol that runs in his vein were actually the one that wrote his piece of work. However, I could never be a full Thompson, I don’t do drugs and I sobered up from alcohol. Considering if you wanted to write like thompson, you would have multiple coke sessions, acid and weed. He certainly didn’t want to advocate that based on this article on Hunter S. Thompson’s daily routine was the height of dissolution but that worked for him and for all the greatest modern writers, they are hooked on something, mostly alcoholics.

The internet itself are actually riddled with Thompson wannabes. I remembered around 2015-2017, people emulated the writings of him, sometimes even Hemingway. Either way both are pretty influential in contemporary writing especially all around blogs. I know that we must cultivate our own style and for me, I do want to mix a bit of both, synthesizing whatever I could from Thompson and his unique writing style to speak out about my voice and story. If I were to ever finish a novel I’ve been working on all these time, I’d put thompson name as my inspiration haha.

Last but not least, consider checking out his works and journalism pieces, they are such a fun read.

I love the idea that you want to mix their style with yours; that can result in something very authentic and fresh. I hope you keep working on your novel and find your voice! I'm sure your own style will shine through. 😊✍️

Love this. (and Thompson, so maybe a lil biased)

I agree about the Internet being riddled with wannabes. Not necessarily a bad thing, except I meet a lotta young men (I'm sure there's girls too, but men seem to dominate) who're stuck trying to emulate Thompson's crazy lifestyle, and less so his writing. It's easier to booze it up than to nurture the flair that made him a genius, no?

But hell yeah, Hunter Thompson's one of my favorite people in the writing world.

Zevon's also someone I really care for and I particularly like this song that he co-wrote with Thompson (they were long-time friends). You might like it :)

😂 Thompson crazy lifestyle isn't easy to emulate because that would be a lot of coke in a day haha. I am surprised he lasted that long with that habit and it's so disheartening to see that he died of suicide.

I haven't heard of Zevon's and that is a good song! Thank you for recommendation, I am not familiar with Rock and Pop Rock but one title that caught my interest now is Lawyers, Guns and Money😄

I've had Battle of Aspen sitting for the longest time in my library and this is my queue to pick it up, and also see if I can love Thompson's works the way you do. Also I didn't know there were weekly writing prompts. Going to check that out now.🌺

We've had weekly prompt for about 9 weeks now. It also personally helps me read consistently and I've been enjoying it. I hope you love the Battle of Aspen, it's pretty wild story and Thompson is definitely a gonzo. I hope you can participate in this week's prompt :)

Oh my, that long??
I'm definitely putting in an entry. Thank you for mentioning. And I hope you're having a nice day.🌺

haha yes! the # on the banner indicates the week. So it has been 9 weeks since we're doing this sort of thing over Hive book club.

I haven't read any Thompson's work. This is my cue to check it out. I'm definitely downloading Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and Battle of Aspen. They have such captivating titles
