A couple of weeks ago I was walking through the center of my city and I came to one of the oldest bookstores around here. They sell new, used, contemporary and older books. The prices are quite affordable but I didn't imagine how much so, since there were book offers for $0.50USD. Obviously I had to take advantage of it and although they were mint but quite old books, I found one that caught my attention: The Manor of roses.
In this post I will share my opinion without spoilers of this short story very Tolkien like
Synopsis
Mandrakes, grotesque beings with a humanoid appearance but that look more like a tree, with branches and leaves like their hair and skin. These live in the forests, leading a rather miserable life. This is why when they “plant a seed”, that is, when a new mandrake is born, they take advantage of the fact that the females maintain a much more human appearance and infiltrate them into human families so that they can have a better life.
However, mandrakes feed on human blood, so over time her human relatives begin to look in poor health and she begins to look plump and flushed. It is there when they become suspicious so they make a cut in the creature's skin, if the blood is resinous then it is one of those infamous beings.
Stephen, a young boy about 15 years old, is a strong, lively and insightful boy. He is a vigilante and to some extent has quite developed morals. This is why he is able to feel compassion for mandrakes, he sees them as creatures who simply have very bad luck but cannot change their nature. For this reason he defends them, but he never imagined that his life would change forever because of one of them...
Science fiction in its beginnings
Short story published in 1966 is a narrative that mixes science fiction and fantasy, taking advantage of ancient beliefs or legends to build a magical world full of illusion. The story develops quite quickly, with an almost dizzying pace that can be confusing in certain parts, but I'm not entirely sure if this is due to translation issues (I read I in Spanish) or if this is simply the author's prose. However, it is easy to pick up the course of the story again and this really only happens a couple of times.
For me, building a good story in just a few pages is a difficult task since you are limited by brevity. Although this was resolved perfectly by the author because he gives just enough information and details to help you empathize with each character in order to make the reader connect with the story. It doesn't go on too long, there's no lack of information either, it's just perfectly balanced.
On the other hand, the narrative is very reminiscent of Tolkien's style, with a certain poetry that gives it a certain romanticism.
Furthermore, what makes you hooked are the magic elements. Thomas creates a fantasy world with creatures that in the popular imagination inspire excitement and intrigue due to their mysticism, which makes you interested in knowing more about them and the way in which they will relate to the protagonists. Precisely speaking of the main characters, they are all endearing, being adequately developed and characteristic for their innocence and naivety. Personally, I consider for example Stephen, to be a noble as well as adorable character, so when he gets emotional the reader also feels that way.
It should also be noted that despite the magic, the story focuses on the most human aspects, such as brotherly love, carnal love and true friendship, making the book in general simple but very beautiful for the pure and beautiful feelings it transmits.

If this book has any continuation or is this the continuation of something else, I really don't know, nor was I able to find much information. But I sincerely consider that it is a very easy to read as well as memorable story, which really deserves much more recognition despite being somewhat old now.
So if you have the opportunity to find this book I totally recommend reading it. You will surely feel that endearing magic that I felt when reading its pages.

Hace un par de semanas caminaba por el centro de mi cuidad y llegué a una de las librerías más antiguas que hay por acá. Venden libros nuevos, usados, contemporáneos y otros más antiguos. Los precios son bastante accesibles pero no imaginaba qué tanto, pues habían ofertas de libros en 0,50 $USD. Obviamente tenía que aprovecharla y aunque eran libros nuevos pero bastante viejos, encontré uno que llamó mi atención: La mansión de las rosas.
En este post les compartiré mi opinión sin spoilers de esta corta historia muy a lo Tolkien
Sinopsis
Las mandrágoras, unos seres grotescos de aspecto humanoide pero que se asemejan más a un árbol, con ramas y hojas como su cabello y piel. Estos habitan en los bosques, llevando una vida bastante miserable. Es por esto que cuando «plantan una semilla», es decir, cuando nace una nueva mandrágora aprovechan que mantienen un aspecto mucho más humano y las infiltran en familias humanas para que puedan lograr tener una mejor vida.
Sin embargo, las mandrágoras se alimentan de sangre humana, por lo que con el tiempo sus familiares humanos comienzan a verse mal de salud y ella comienza a verse rolliza y sonrojada. Es allí cuando sospechan por lo que realizan un corte en la piel de la criatura, si la sangre es resinosa entonces es uno de esos infames seres.
Stephen, un joven chico de algunos cortos 15 años es un muchacho fuerte, vivaz y perspicaz. Él es un justiciero y hasta cierto punto tiene una moral bastante desarrollada. Es por ello que es capaz de sentir compasión por las mandrágoras, los ve como criaturas que simplemente tienen muy mala suerte pero que no pueden cambiar su naturaleza. Por esto las defiende, pero jamás imaginó que su vida cambiaría para siempre por una de ellas...
Ciencia ficción en sus inicios
Historia breve publicada en 1966 es una narración que mezcla la ciencia ficción y la fantasía, aprovechando antiguas creencias o leyendas para construir un mundo mágico cargado de ilusión. La historia se desarrolla bastante rápido, con un ritmo casi vertiginoso que puede llegar a confundir en ciertas partes pero no estoy del todo sgra si esto es por cuestiones de traducción o si sencillamente ésa es la prosa del autor. Sin embargo, es sencillo retomar el hilo de la historia y que realmente esto ocurre solo un par de veces.
Para mí construir una buena historia en solo unas pocas páginas es tarea difícil puesto que estás limitado por la brevedad. Aunque esto fue resuelto de manera perfecta por el autor porque da la información y detalles justos como para empatizar con cada personaje para así hacer que el lector conecte con el relato. No se explaya demasiado, tampoco falta información, es simplemente perfectamente equilibrado.
Por otro lado la narración recuerda mucho al estilo de Tolkien, con cierta poesía que le otorga cierto romanticismo.
Además lo que hace que te enganches son los elementos de magia. Thomas crea un mundo de fantasía con criaturas que en el imaginario popular inspiran emoción e intriga por su misticismo, lo cual hace que te intereses por saber más sobre ellas y la manera en que se relacionarán a los protagonistas. Justamente hablando de los personajes principales, todos son entrañables, siendo desarrollados adecuadamente y característicos por su inocencia e ingenuidad. En lo personal considero por ejemplo a Stephen como un personaje noble así como adorable, por ello cuando él se emociona el lector también lo siente así.
También hay que destacar que apesar de la magia, la historia se centra en los aspectos más humanos, como el amor fraternal, el carnal y la amistad verdadera, haciendo que el libro en general sea una historia simple pero muy hermosa por los sentimientos puros y bonitos que transmite.

Si este libro tiene alguna continuación o es éste la continuación de algo más lo desconozco, tampoco fui capaz de encontrar mayor información. Pero sinceramente considero que es una historia muy fácil de leer así como memorable, que realmente merece mucho más reconocimiento a pesar de ser algo vieja ya.
Así que si tienes la oportunidad de encontrar este libro te recomiendo totalmente leerlo. Seguramente sientas esa magia entrañable que sentí al leer sus páginas.
