If you read my previous post in this community you will already know that I have decided to talk about my favorite book saga, The Dark Tower. Written by Stephen King a long time ago, for me it is a story that mixes western with fantasy that generates a magical and bizarre world capable of captivating anyone. Today in this post I will share my opinion about the second book, The Drawing of the Three
Synopsis
We continue in the dystopian world of Roland Deschain who after his last encounter with the man in black wakes up on a solitary beach but this is not a good awakening since he is immediately attacked by a strange creature similar to a lobster that manages to tear off two of his fingers (what an inconvenience for a gunslinger), part of a toe and not satisfied with that, leaves him seriously poisoned. In the midst of a feverish delirium due to the poison, Roland manages to crawl along the beach trying to survive.
At some point he finds three doors. Yes, three wooden doors in the middle of the sand on the beach that are not attached to any support, they are just there. Combining all his last strength, he manages to open them, finding to his surprise that each one takes him to a different world and time: New York in 1987, the second to 1964 and the last one goes to the same place but in 1977. Roland knows that these are his last hopes so he crosses the first door to save himself, thus entering the mind of a young drug addict named Eddie Dean. The boy feels Roland's presence and thinks he is having a bad trip, but he will soon realize that it was something very real, perhaps too real...
Soon Roland would pass through the other doors, encountering Odetta Holmes, Detta Walker, and an infamous psychopath. Along the way our protagonist would understand that those doors were not only his way of salvation but something more...
My opinion
I think this is the slowest book of all but at the same time necessary since its purpose is to introduce several extremely relevant characters who will contribute a lot to the continuity of the story. I think that all books of this style tend to be like this, slow, probably somewhat tedious but there doesn't seem to be any other way to tell them. However, since we are discovering new stories, new and great dramas as well as there are unexpected connections between different times of our world, for me that is what makes the book entertaining. It leaves you with that need to know what happened to each character and how they got to where they are.
Besides, all the stories are tragic, horrendous, especially that of Odetta and a little boy who comes back. If something is characteristic of King's characters it is that they all suffer unimaginable horrors, so each event narrated leaves you with your mouth open. My thoughts honestly sometimes were like: If something like this happens to someone in real life, they would be severely traumatized . To read King is to expect the worst. Not rosy and happy things.
It also reaffirms the magic that plagues this world since inexplicable things happen, like those doors that appear out of nowhere and connect you not only to another world but also to different times, and then make you somehow have a kind of possession of the body. from a stranger although he is completely aware of your presence... A lot of magic.
On the other hand, it is the first look at characters who will undoubtedly win your heart, not necessarily in this book (although I have to admit that I immediately loved Eddie), but later you will love them too much.
Eddie Dean is a drug addict who, thanks to Roland, will give another meaning to his life, exploring a side of himself that he had left behind due to many traumas. Odetta is a resilient woman with a determined, strong character, but she still tries to hide the anger she feels for what she had to experience as a child. That anger that she was trying to hide comes to light in a way that not even she herself suspects... And her name is Detta Walker.
Roland continues to be the coldest and most calculating character, the one who immediately understands what is happening either through instinct, intuition or his intelligence but manages to get out of trouble in the least expected way. However, here in this book is when we begin to notice that if there is something he lacks, it is mental stability and emotional intelligence. But of course, he has experienced his own traumas.
Roland is an enigmatic character with an unknown heart. Even in the second book you don't know exactly why he does what he does, his motivation is never clear but the only thing he highlights is that it is essential to save the Dark Tower. There is nothing more important than that. Therefore he will be able to do anything, take any risk and make any sacrifice that becomes necessary. Throughout this story you won't know how to distinguish between whether you love him or hate him.
In this book there will be a lot of suspense, introduction and character development along with their dark pasts. So if these are aspects that interest you, there is nothing better than a Stephen King book to read. This one in particular will keep you hooked.

Escrita por Stephen King hace un montón de tiempo para mí es una historia que mezcla western con fantasía que genera un mundo mágico y bizarro capaz de capturar a cualquiera. Hoy en este post les compartiré mi opinión sobre el segundo libro, La llegada de los tres
Sinopsis
Continuamos en el mundo distópico de Roland Deschain quien después de su último encuentro con el hombre de negro despierta en una playa solitaria pero este no es un buen despertar puesto que inmediatamente es atacado por una extraña criatura parecida a una langosta que alcanza a arrancarle dos dedos de la mano (menudo inconveniente para un pistolero), parte de un dedo del pie y no conforme con eso, lo deja gravemente envenenado. En medio de un delirio febril por culpa del veneno Roland se las arregla para avanzar a arrastras por la playa intentando sobrevivir.
En algún punto encuentra tres puertas. Sí, tres puertas de madera en medio de la arena de la playa, no estás unidas a ningún soporte, sólo están allí. Uniendo todas sus últimas fuerzas consigue abrirlas encontrando para su sorpresa que cada una lo lleva a un mundo y tiempo distinto: Nueva York en 1987, la segunda a 1964 y la última va al mismo lugar pero en 1977. Roland sabe que estas son sus últimas esperanzas por lo que cruza la primera puerta para salvarse, entrando así en la mente de un joven drogadicto llamado Eddie Dean. El muchacho siente la presencia de Roland y cree tener un mal viaje, pero pronto se daría cuenta que era algo muy real, quizá demasiado...
Pronto Roland cruzaría las otras puertas, encontrando a Odetta Holmes, Detta Walker y un infame psicópata. En el transcurso nuestro protagonista entendería que esas puertas no eran sólo su vía de salvación sino algo más...
Mi opinión
Este creo que es el libro más lento de todos pero a la vez necesario puesto que su finalidad es introducir a varios personajes sumamente relevantes que aportarán mucho a la continuidad de la historia. Considero que todos los libros de este estilo tienden a ser así, lentos, probablemente algo tediosos pero no parece haber otra forma de narrarlos. Sin embargo, como estamos descubriendo nuevas historias, nuevos y grandes dramas así como hay conexiones inesperadas entre distintas épocas de nuestro mundo, para mí es lo que hace el libro entretenido. Te deja esa necesidad de saber qué ocurrió con cada personaje y cómo llegó a donde está.
Aparte todas las historias son trágicas, horrendas, sobretodo la de Odetta y un pequeño niño que vuelve a aparecer. Si algo es característico de los personajes de King es que todos sufren horrores inimaginables, por lo que cada suceso narrado te deja con la boca abierta. Mis pensamientos honestamente a veces son algo como: Si a alguien en la vida real le pasa algo así, queda severamente traumatizado. Leer a King es esperar lo peor. Nada de cosas rosas y felices.
Además reafirma la magia que plaga este mundo puesto que cosas inexplicables ocurren, como esas puertas que aparecen de la nada y te conectan no solo a otro mundo sino también a distintas épocas, para luego hacer que de alguna forma tengas una especie de posesión del cuerpo de un extraño aunque este está completamente consciente de tu presencia... Mucha magia.
Por otro lado es el primer vistazo a personajes que sin duda alguna se ganarán tu corazón, no necesariamente en este libro (aunque he de admitir que enseguida me encantó Eddie), pero más adelante los vas a querer demasiado.
Eddie Dean es un drogadicto que gracias a Roland irá dándole otro sentido a su vida, explorando un lado de sí mismo que había dejado atrás por culpa de muchos traumas. Odetta es una mujer resiliente con un carácter determinado, fuerte, pero aún así trata de ocultar la ira que siente por lo que tuvo que vivir de pequeña. Esa rabia que intentaba ocultar sale a la luz de una forma que ni ella misma sospecha... Y su nombre es Detta Walker.
Roland continúa siendo el personaje más frío y calculador, ese que entiende de inmediato lo que ocurre bien sea por instinto, intuición o su inteligencia pero logra salir de un apuro de la manera menos esperada. Sin embargo aquí en este libro es cuando empezamos a notar que si de algo carece es de estabilidad e inteligencia emocional. Pero claro, él ha vivído sus propios traumas.
Roland es un personaje enigmático, de corazón ignoto. Todavía en el segundo libro no sabes exactamente porqué hace lo que hace, su motivación jamás es clara pero lo único que él destaca es que es primordial salvar la Torre Oscura. No hay nada más importante que eso. Por ello él será capaz de hacer lo que sea, tomar cualquier riesgo y hacer cualquier sacrificio que sea necesario. A lo largo de esta historia no sabrás distinguir entre si lo amas o lo odias.
En este libro habrá mucho suspenso, introducción y desarrollo de personajes junto con sus pasados oscuros. Así que si estos son aspectos que te interesan, no hay nada mejor que un libro de Stephen King para leer. Éste en particular te mantendrá enganchado.
