32 candles – a beautifully twisted romance novel (Book Review)

I am ugly as a monkey and black as night. And that's why they all call me Monkey Night in this school.

I don’t why I started reading this book when I already have about two opened books. It’s so unlike me to leave one book unfinished and open another one but that’s what I seem to be doing these days.

I wanted to go back to the book I was reading earlier, so I clicked on the moon+ reader app and i let my eyes wander around, searching for the book I was reading earlier on.

Then, I came across the book 32 candles. I don’t know how my fingers settled on the book 32 candles but the moment I set my eyes on the first paragraph, I forgot that I was meant to be reading something else.

The book 32 candles is a book written by Ernessa T. Carter. It follows the story of a young black south African girl – Davidia Jones. Davidia was born to a promiscuous mother in a small town Missisppi. Everybody hates her or so she thinks. Because of her mother’s promiscuous lifestyle, the women in the town don’t hesitate to tell her to her face that she is ugly. And in school, she is nicknamed Monkey Night because she is ugly.

After an incident with her mom, she decides to stop talking and became mute. When she watches the movie Pretty in Pink, she hopes to have a happy ending just like Molly Ringwald in the movie. Her boring life however came to an end with the arrival of James Farell. A very handsome football player who recently transferred to her school. She falls in love with James and begins to stalk him, looking for an opportunity to create her own Molly Ringwald ending. Everything changes when the students play a prank on her.

There were so many things I loved about this book. One is Davidia as a character. she had a very rough start in life and instead of sulking and living in the shadows because of all she went through during her childhood, she grew up into a strong woman and faced life’s challenges head on. I liked that she didn’t let those mean comments ruin her. I liked that she knew to use the opportunities handed her way very well. It was beautiful to see her grow into a strong character.

Like I said earlier, I was drawn into this book due to its captivating first paragraph. Now, this book was really hard to put down because things kept on happening every now and then. There was no suspense. It was a just a romance story with so many ups and downs. The whole Davidia and James thing was really fun to read. There were annoying characters too and satisfying moments.

Permit me to talk about the ending. Thinking about it makes me emotional as I write this. For an extremely fast-paced book, this book had a very beautiful happy ending. After everything Davidia had gone through in this book, she definitely deserved it. I was at the brink of tears when I read the last three lines. Yeahh, that’s how good the ending was. Good enough to make you want to cry just because of how perfect the ending was.

Although there were some motives behind some characters actions I didn’t really understand, I didn’t really mind because so many other things were perfect. This was a really good book to read.

It’s a fast paced romance book and even though I’m not a fan of fast paced anything, I’ll give it a rating of 4.1 out of 5. It was a very interesting book to read. I loved it.

Quick question: Don’t you my fellow readers think we should invent something that we can probably bite down on or hold in our hands whenever we want to squeal? It’ll be really good for us when we are reading in public and want to squeal.

I really missed the old good days that I will sit down for hours reading novels. I think nowadays I am so engaged with academics

That was me about two months ago when I had series of exams😂. I'm currently on a break so I'm enjoying myself. Don't worry, your time is coming

Love the quote that you shared from the book!

It's a really nice quote. Thank you so much for reading

I am so used to doing this😂. A book has to be very very exciting for me to read it in one sitting.

This book seems lovely by the way and the quote above is poignant.

Seems like I'm gradually leaning towards this phase😂

It's a very lovely book actually. Thanks for reading
