Dinner time is waiting. The rice will soon be cooked from the rice cooker. Also, a hungry stomach.
Lots of outdoor activities make me hungry more easily. This time I chose to eat rice as an alternative to my usual potato diet menu. Sometimes I also eat sweet potatoes and pumpkin. So, returning to rice as our native main food here is to avoid boredom. Also, to surprise my tongue for the missed rice.
Unfortunately, there are m only okra (lady fingers) left. I was not allowed to go to the market again that evening. Honestly, I've never cooked lady finger before. At first I bought Lady Fingers to make Grilled Lady Fingers for Vegan BBQ in the next few days. But since I have to cook for dinner this time, I have to use that first.
I'm not sure if this Lady Fingers recipe for side dishes can work. It's because the first time. Some people say cooking Lady Fingers is quite tricky.
I ventured to cook Lady Fingers with a version of the seasoning that's comfortable on my tongue. I only use simple seasoning as my daily food in general.
I found Lady Fingers at the modern market. Not something local in our society. But seeing people from other countries cooking this vegetable, I was interested in trying it. Although originally first intention just for Grilled, not for Steamed.
This time I will have the courage to cook Lady Fingers using steam. Which is then poured with soy-onion sauce.
Have you eaten Lady Fingers before? They do have a unique shape. Long and slender like a woman's fingers. But inside it actually has a texture of cavities. The cavities are hollow and have tiny seeds inside. How interesting!
The Ingredients
- 150 grams of okra (lady's fingers)
- 2 tablespoons of soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons of cornstarch
- a thumb-size of ginger, flattened
- 3 cloves of small red onion, chopped
- 2 cloves of garlic, chopped
- 300 ml of water
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
Cooking Instructions
Remove the base of Lady Fingers.
I use a knife. Gently slice the base Lady Fingers. Then we can see the inside of Lady Fingers which is so beautiful.
Steam Lady Fingers.
After washing thoroughly, steam Lady Fingers for 15 minutes.
Mix Soy Sauce and Corn Flour
In a bowl, mix together soy sauce with corn flour, water and salt. Until flour combine well with soy sauce and water.
Stir-fry Onion
Preheat cooking oil. Then add chopped onion, garlic, and flattened ginger. Stir-fry until they smell delicious.
Add soy sauce mixture
After the stir-fried onions are fragrant, add the soy sauce mixture. Keep stirring until they become a thick sauce.
This soy sauce is ready to be served and sprinkled over the steamed lady fingers. Don't forget to sprinkle fellow seeds or even crispy crackers.
To be honest, Lady Fingers was quite acceptable to my palate. But the method of cooking Lady Fingers this time turned out to be not full makes me satisfying. Why? Because it doesn't suit my comfortable taste. The inside of Lady Fingers turned out to have quite a mucus and slimy texture. That sensation makes eating with rice an unpleasant atmosphere.
I'm looking for a solution. Finally I added spicy red chilli paste. And sure enough, steamed lady finger with soy sauce, my tongue can be more acceptable. Spicy taste helped me!
In my opinion, Lady Fingers is more appropriate when served as a side dish without gravy. Like Grilled. I'm curious as to what it would be like if Lady Fingers were Grilled with lots of Chili flakes. Next time I will try again to conquer Lady Fingers.
If you have a better way of cooking Lady Fingers, you can recommend it to me. See you guys.
