Then my mind came up, how about turmeric rice? Oh, what a great idea. Because I also have tempeh, and some of my favorite vegetables.
In Indonesia, we often make yellow rice. But people eat yellow rice more often for breakfast. It's actually a personal choice.
Because I don't eat rice for breakfast, so I can eat rice at lunch or dinner. Like this time, I will prepare yellow rice or turmeric rice for dinner.
I have no used a rice cooker since long time since my rice cooker broke. I did not want buy a new rice cooker. I want to live healthier, go back to my grandmother's cooking style in the past. So, I cook rice cooker using a steamer.
Have you ever served steamed rice? Especially steamed turmeric rice. Indeed, using a steamer makes cooking rice more complicated but the texture will be tastier, and it is considered healthier. Let's make steamed turmeric rice!
STEAMED TURMERIC RICE
For up to 4 servings
- 1 cup of rice
- 2 cups of rice
- 1/2 tablespoon of turmeric powder
- a thumb size of ginger, flattened
- 1 lemongrass stalk, divided into two parts, flattened
- 3 cloves of garlic, sliced
- 5 small cloves of shallots, sliced
- 1/2 teaspoon of salt

MARINATED TEMPEH
- 100 grams of tempeh
- 1 teaspoon of ground coriander
- 1 teaspoon of salt
- 2 teaspoons of sweet soy sauce.
- 1 cup of water.
I let them marinate for at least 15 minutes or until cooking time arrives while waiting for the other ingredients to cook.
Set aside the tempeh while waiting for the other ingredients to cook to complement the steamed turmeric rice dish.
COLORFUL VEGGIES
I used carrots, purple cabbage, and edamame. for the colorful vegetables ingredients.
You can use other types of vegetables that you have. You can use broccoli or peas.
First, I boiled the edamame for 5 minutes. Then, remove them immediately so they don't get overcooked.
Then, remove the edamame from the pods. Also, don't forget to thinly slice the crispy purple cabbage! To make it even tastier, you can soak the purple cabbage in ice water for maximum crunchy texture 😊
For seasoning, use 3 cloves of garlic, 3 cloves of shallots, 2-3 tablespoons of chili sauces, or tomato sauces, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Also prepare enough water to avoid all the ingredients from burning later.
Heat some oil, then add sliced garlic, and sliced shallots. Saute until fragrant. Add salt and chili sauce.
Then, add fried tempeh and slices of carrot. Mix them all well. Add a little water to cook them for about 5 minutes, then remove from heat.
SERVE
Serve steamed turmeric rice, with tempeh, and other vegetables.
A savory dinner full of colors. And you can add side dishes according to your taste.
