The Fraser Island Shipwreck

in #hive-1819642 years ago

I was looking through my photos from Fraser Island, deciding which ones I should put in this post, when I had the idea of making multiple posts sharing the highlights from Fraser Island in more detail and with some extra info.

I'll start this off with some images of this shipwreck located on the main beach, which is actually classed as a highway in Queensland, and you can travel at 80km/h! This is fairly fast, especially for a beach, and one of the stops is this shipwreck.

S.S. Maheno was once a luxury cruise ship operating mainly between Australia and New Zealand, and when war broke out (WW1) it was used as a hospital ship for injured soldiers. It then operated until 1935 when it was retired and was bought by the Japanese to be taken back to Japan for the scrap metal.

During the trip they faced severe weather which snapped the connecting line between this ship and the main ship.

The ship floated away and became beached on Fraser Island where attempts to recover it were unsuccessful.

It was fairly uneventful for a while after, until WW2 (around 1945) where the Australian fighter pilots used it for target practice.

It now sits here on the main beach where it is slowly rusting away and is one of the islands most popular tourist attractions.

Hopefully you found this info interesting and enjoy these drone images I captured.

I figured that if I was going to photograph something so popular, I might as well get a cool drone shot out of it :)

Hi, @benwickenton,
great post

Thank you!

Great shots and history. The last shot looks like the carcass of some beast, which aligns nicely with its historical meaning and importance.

Thank you and I agree, so interesting learning about unique things like this!

great drone shots, I visited it about 30 years ago, I am pretty sure this is a photo I took at the time.

Thank you! Wow, hasn’t it deteriorated so much in 30 years! Loved Fraser Island such a beautiful place
