As I mentioned in my travel posts last year, I don't like the vacation format that goes between hotel, sea and foods. I want to discover new places at homeland or abroad as much as possible. Before the pandemic, I traveled abroad every year. However, the pandemic caused millions of people, including me, to change their travel plans for at least 2 years. After the pandemic, it was time for me to start traveling abroad. Last year, I did this by going to Thessaloniki, Greece. My second choice for an abroad vacation this year was Greece again. I will write about Plomari in the fourth part of my Lesbos island travel post series.

Geçen seneki seyahat yazılarımda da belirttiğim gibi otel, deniz ve yemek arasında geçip giden tatil anlayışını sevmiyorum. Yurtiçinde veya yurtdışında mümkün olduğunca yeni yerler keşfetmek istiyorum. Pandemiden önce her yıl yurtdışı seyahatleri yapan biriydim. Fakat, pandemi benim gibi dünyada milyonlarca insanların seyahat planlarını en az 2 yıl değiştirmesine sebep oldu. Pandemiden sonra benim için artık yurtdışı seyahatlerime başlamanın zamanı gelmişti. Geçen sene bunu Yunanistan’ın Selanik şehrine giderek gerçekleştirdim. Bu yılki ikinci yurtdışı seyahat tercihim yine Yunanistan oldu. Lesbos adası gezi yazısı serimin dördüncü bölümünde sizlere Plomari’den bahsedeceğim.
After leaving the Barbayannis Ouzo Museum and Factory, we went to Plomari, the second largest town on the Lesbos island, which is about 10 minutes away from the factory. We parked the car somewhere by the sea, then we started walking towards the center of Plomari. The first thing that greeted us was a cafe with yellow painted chairs. If you look at the people sitting inside and the shape of the building, it looks like our kahvehane, but with one difference: you can also drink alcohol here. We continued walking along the stone-paved main street of Plomari. After the kahvehane, there is a giant plane tree that is said to have been planted in the 1810s.
Barbayannis Uzo Müzesi ve Fabrikası’ndan ayrıldıktan sonra fabrikadan yaklaşık 10 dakika mesafede bulunan ve Lesbos adasının en büyük ikinci kenti Plomari’ye geçtik. Arabayı deniz kenarında bir yere park ettikten sonra Plomari’nin içine doğru yürümeye başladık. Bizi ilk karşılayan, sarı boyalı sandalyelerin olduğu bir kafenia oldu. İçinde outran insanlara ve yapının şekline bakarsanız, bizim kahvehane’ye benziyor ama bir farkla, burada içki de içiliyor. Plomari’nin taş kaldırımlı ana caddesinden yürümeye devam ettik. Kahvehaneyi geçtikten sonra 1810’lu yıllarda dikildiği söylenilen dev bir çınar ağacı var.
Walking a little more on this beautiful street with small shops on both sides, we came across fast food shop, mostly yellow again. After turning left here and crossing the bridge, there are cafes like coffeehouses with chairs set up in the open area, which is usually the case in villages. It is quite an authentic environment. There is also a giant plane tree here. I wonder whether this one was the plane tree planted in the 1810s? I am not sure. We went back the way we came and crossed the bridge again. The Sedountas River passes under this bridge.
Sağlı sollu küçük dükkanların olduğu bu güzel caddede biraz daha yürüdükten sonra karşımıza yine sarı renk ağırlıklı bir fast food dükkanı çıktı. Burda sola dönüp köprüyü geçtikten sonra, bizim genelde köylerde olan açık alana sandalyelerin kurulduğu kahvaneler gibi kafeler bulunuyor. Oldukça otantik bir ortam. Burda da dev bir çınar ağacı bulunmakta. Acaba 1810’lu yıllarda dikilen çınar ağacı bu muydu? Emin olamadım. Geldiğimiz yoldan geri dönüp tekrar köprüden geçtik. Bu köprünün altından Sedountas nehri geçiyormuş.
They call the city of Plomari, which consists of seven villages, the capital of ouzo. In addition to the Barbayannis Ouzo factory, many small-scale ouzo factories have been established here. They hold a traditional ouzo festival every August. Plomari seemed like a very quiet town to us. Perhaps, it was because we visited it during the siesta time. The most beautiful and colorful place we had seen on the Lesbos island so far was Plomari. In my opinion, if the buildings here were painted yellow and in different colors, they would attract more attention from tourists; however, as far as I understand, they prefer naturalness and simplicity on the island general. There is no such thing as painting the buildings and streets like in the Cyclades Islands.
Yedi köyden oluşan Plomari kenti için uzonun başkenti diyorlar. Barbayannis Uzo fabrikasının yanısıra küçük çaplı çok sayıda uzo fabrikası da burada kurulmuştur. Her yıl Ağustos ayında geleneksel uzo festivali yapıyorlarmış. Plomari bize çok sakin bir kasaba gibi gelmişti. Belki de siesta saatinde gezdiğimizden dolayı olabilir. Şu ana kadar Lesbos adasında gördüğümüz en güzel ve renkli yer Plomari’ydi. Benim fikrim, burdaki binalar sarı ve daha farklı renklere boyanırsa turistlerin daha çok ilgisini çekebilir; ama, anladığım kadarıyla adanın genelinde doğallık ve sadeliği tercih ediyorlar. Kiklad adalarında olduğu gibi binaların ve sokakların boyanması gibi bir durum söz konusu değil.
There were many more places to visit in Plomari, but we couldn’t do it because we didn’t have enough time and were tired. We sat in a cafe at the entrance of the street, drank cold coffee and rested. It was six in the evening. We got in the car and headed to the hotel. The hotel we were going to stay at was close to Gulf of Giera. We arrived at the hotel after about an hour’s drive. This was the view of our hotel. I can say that I didn’t like the sea very much because it was a sea of a gulf. Also, the beach was full of little stones, not sand. We gave up the idea of swimming and wanted to rest at the hotel.
Plomari’nin gezilecek daha çok yeri vardı, ama zaman olmadığından ve yorgun olduğumuzdan bunu yapamadık. Caddenin girişinde olan bir kafede oturup soğuk kahve içtik ve dinlendik. Saat akşam altı olmuştu. Arabaya binerek otele doğru yola çıktık. Kalacağımız otel Yera Körfezi’ne yakındı. Yaklaşık bire saat yolculuğun ardından otele vardık. Otelimizin manzarası bu şekildeydi. Körfez olduğu için denizi pek beğenmedim diyebilirim. Ayrıca, plajı kum değil taştandı. Denize girme fikrinden vazgeçip otelde dinlenmek istedik.
After resting at the hotel until nine o'clock, we went to the center of Mytilene to see the nightlife in Mytilene. There are many taverns and restaurants around the Mytilene marina. Since most of the tourists coming to the island are Turkish, it is possible to hear Turkish music : ) After having dinner and drinks at a tavern, we returned to the hotel at midnight. Saat dokuza kadar otelde dinlendikten sonra Midilli’nin gece hayatını görmek için Midilli merkeze gittik. Midilli marinanın etrafında birçok taverna ve restaurant bulunuyor. Adaya gelen turistlerin büyük bir kısmı Türk olduğundan Türkçe müzikler duymak mümkün : ) Bir tavernada akşam yemeği yeyip bir şeyler içtikten sonra gece yarısı otele geri döndük.
