For many, the word Shangri-La takes them to a beautiful book, "Lost Horizons" by James Hilton, written in 1933. In that wonderful book, Hilton tells us about a paradise on earth, a place of happiness, with a touch of Tibet, which he called Shangri-La. That story inspired the inhabitants of this place in China in the Yunnan province to change the ancient name of the city from Zhongdian to Shangri-La.

A visit to Tibet, whether on the way or not, requires a visit to Shangri-La, a small city lost among green mountains and lakes that inspire a walk through the countryside and the open air, culminating in a visit to the Ganden Sumtseling Gompa Monastery, a complex of houses inhabited by monks that is one of the most important of its kind in China, wooden houses that date back more than three centuries in Chinese history.
On this walk through Shangri-La you will also love to come into contact with one of the most appreciated species of monkeys in the world, the golden monkeys, an endangered species that has been taken under the protection of the environmental authorities in order to achieve its multiplication and that can be appreciated on this walk through northwest Yunan.
In the So Ya La Tibetan Lounge located in the Old Town next to White Stupa, Shangri-La County, is a cozy place where you can order delicious Tibetan food dishes, with the unmistakable seal of the place that has, as I told you, a varied menu.
