Melbourne has a very strong street art scene, so much so that we use it to get tourists in, one of the places they will go is Hosier lane, which is wall to wall or maybe wall on wall street art, ever changing and full of tourists posing.
In a building on the corner of Hosier Lane and Flinders Lane is a exhibition which just opened called 'Outsiders' this is a collection of Street art, of mainly Australian street Artists, but also so big names like Banksy and others.
It is a public showing of a part of a private collection - the Sandrew collection. Which is Sandra Powell and Andrew King, who where both there when I visited. There are 100 works in the exhibition, and it will change about every 6 months.
If you are in Melbourne it is well worth a look, it's free so even if you have 5 minutes you should pop in and discover what's on offer.
and what is? let's start taking a look
This is by Belgian artist ROA
This piece is by Ron English (which is American) and is a rework of a John Singer Sargeant Work.
This one by D*Face, who is English
So given I said this was a exhibition of mainly Australian Artists and that Melbourne is so important for street art why have I ended up with three shots of a Belgian, American a Brit, well firstly I didn't realise it until now, and I guess the other thing is the Australian stuff was just so fimilar to me, and the more street end of street art are images, stencils, tags I've seen a thousand times before, okay maybe not to 15 years, but HA-HA robot man, or Ned Kelly, or Adnate's portraits are things I've walked past 50 times before, photogrpahed before, can find on the street of Melbourne whenever I want.
And this is the street art thing, it is more accessible that almost any other form of art (except maybe Architecture). Okay to own it you need to be rich and to have inside your house there needs to be so domestication of the art but I can turn my head to the left sitting here and see some art or is this just Vandalism
And then of course I needed to find some real Melbourne street art on the way home so I present to you two works.
