In every corner of the world there are stories, beliefs and myths of creatures with years of antiquity that lurk for different reasons and do different things. I am talking about mythology, which studies the different myths of a culture. It is interesting when we discover our own and those of other countries, some are terrifying, others inspiring.
Now, to talk about mythological creatures around the world, I can not and do not want to overlook my country, Venezuela, which has its beliefs and no shortage of mythological creatures to mention, but there was one that until now I had not heard of.

In Venezuela there is mention of a mythological creature called El Chivato, this half-man half-animal being, which is two meters tall and has an unpleasant smell of sulfur and a piercing look like flames, chases travelers, It is said that if when traveling along a road, traces of hooves, blood and smoke are observed in the place, it is very likely that El Chivato has passed by, this mythical character is considered the personification of the devil.
The Chivato has been seen in the Venezuelan plains, in the states of Barinas, Merida, Lara and Carabobo, his myth is native to Panama and reached other nearby countries like Venezuela, where he scares those who venture to walk alone in the early morning attacking them from behind, it is also said that in places where the Chivato passes, the land does not sprout again, leaving desolation in its wake. Neither the trees nor the flowers grow any more and the land becomes sterile.
I particularly think that it must not be pleasant for anyone to meet such a creature in the early morning and be attacked from behind and bitten on the back of the neck.
On the other hand, if I were given a choice of the world's mythological creatures, I would start my list with one of Greek origin, Cerberus.
Cerberus was the dog of Hades, the Greek god of the Underworld, and this dog he owned was not common, for he had three heads, each with a name: the left head called Veltesta, the right head Drittesta and the central one Tretesta. This peculiar dog was in charge of guarding the entrance to the underworld; its purpose was to prevent both entrances and exits. There are versions of this dog in different movies, one of them is Fluffy, a magical beast that guarded a treasure, in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.
Another creature that I find interesting and that has served to insult many women around the world are the harpies also from Greek mythology, they had the body of a bird of prey and the face of a woman, their mission was to enforce the punishment imposed by Zeus to Phineus, they were known as “hounds of Zeus”.
Their goal was to steal food just when the victim was about to eat, they were also attributed with storms and chaos at sea. Because they acted with bad intentions, with time they began to be called malicious and unpleasant harpies.

Finally, I will name one of the most famous creatures of mythology, especially in the sea, they are talked about in books and movies, even in children's movies, and they are the mermaids, creatures that from the torso up are beautiful women, but from the waist down have fish tails, their songs can hypnotize, to the point that it is said that with their melodious voices they trapped sailors and they are never heard of again. About the latter there is a recent film that touches on the subject in an interesting way: it is called Creatures of the Lantern and is available on Prime Video.
I could go on, but these are some of the creatures that catch my attention the most, so I will say goodbye to my participation in the topic proposed for February 3 in the Monthly Prompts | February INLEO
En cada rincón del mundo hay historias, creencias y mitos de criaturas con años de antigüedad que merodean por diferentes motivos y hacen diferentes cosas. Hablo de la mitología, la cual estudia a los diferentes mitos de una cultura. Es interesante cuando descubrimos las propias y las de otros países, algunas son terroríficas, otras inspiradoras.
Ahora bien, para hablar de criaturas mitológicas alrededor del mundo, no puedo ni quiero pasar por alto mi país, Venezuela, el cual tiene sus creencias y no faltan criaturas mitológicas por mencionar, pero había una de la que hasta ahora no había escuchado.
En Venezuela se hace mención de una criatura mitológica a la que se le llama El Chivato, este ser mitad hombre mitad animal, que mide dos metros de altura y posee un desagradable olor a azufre y, una penetrante mirada como llamas, persigue a los viajeros, asusta a los borrachos y acosa a las muchachas que caminan por la oscuridad, se dice que si al transitar una vía se observan rastros de pezuñas, sangre y humo en el lugar, es muy probable que El Chivato haya pasado por ahí, a este personaje mítico se le considera la personificación del diablo.
El Chivato ha sido visto en los llanos Venezolanos, en los estados de Barinas, Mérida, Lara y Carabobo, su mito es oriundo de Panamá y llego a otros países cercanos como Venezuela, donde asusta a los que se aventuran a andar solos en las madrugadas atacándolos desde atrás, también se dice que por los lugares donde pasa el Chivato, el terreno no vuelve a retoñar, dejando desolación tras su paso. Los árboles ni las flores crecen más y la tierra se torna estéril.
Particularmente creo que no debe ser para nadie agradable encontrarse con una criatura como está en la madrugada y ser atacado desde atrás y mordido por la nuca.
Por otra parte, si me dieran a elegir de entre las criaturas mitológicas del mundo, comenzaría mi lista con una de origen griego, Cerbero
Cerbero era el perro de Hades, el dios griego del Inframundo, y este perro que poseía no era común, pues tenía tres cabezas, cada una de ellas con un nombre: la cabeza izquierda llamada Veltesta, la cabeza derecha Drittesta y la central Tretesta. Este perro peculiar se encargaba de custodiar la entrada del inframundo; su objetivo era impedir tanto entradas como salidas del mismo. De este can hay versiones en diferentes películas, una de ellas es Fluffy, una bestia mágica que custodiaba un tesoro, en Harry Potter y la Piedra Filosofal.
Otra criatura que me parece interesante y que ha servido para insultar a muchas féminas alrededor del mundo son las arpías también procedentes de la mitología griega, poseían cuerpo de ave de rapiña y rostro de mujer, su misión era hacer cumplir el castigo impuesto por Zeus a Fineo, se les conocía como "sabuesos de Zeus".
Su objetivo era robar la comida justo cuando la víctima se disponía a comer, además se les atribuían las tormentas y caos en el mar. Por actuar con mala intensión, con el tiempo comienzo a llamarse a las mujeres malintencionadas y desagradables arpías.
Por último, nombraré a una de las criaturas más famosas de la mitología sobre todo en el mar de ellas se habla en libros y películas hasta en las infantiles y son las sirenas, criaturas que del torso para arriba son hermosas mujeres, pero de la cintura para bajo tienen cola de pez, sus cantos pueden hipnotizar, al punto de que se dicen que con sus voces melodiosas atrapaban a marineros y nunca más se sabe de ellos. Sobre estas últimas hay una película reciente que toca el tema de manera interesante: se titula Criaturas del farol y está disponible en Prime Video
