Hello everyone, it is a pleasure to be a part of this great community where I could learn and share my thoughts and ideas. Today, I was scrolling my facebook feed when I saw a friend wrote these words "If you don't want to be ordinary, don't do what ordinary people do". That was a good reflection of my present situation and I felt I could write about it.
Some persons in life expect success but they do not want to pay the price that comes with it. I am presently writing my Second semester excaminations as a First year Medical student. If you are familiar with that career, you know that the stakes are high and you will eventually repeat the entire year if you failed a certain number of courses below the threshold. Success in this line comes with a huge demand and that with lots of sacrifice.
So to speak that nobody would have to sit on the fence being a Medical student with the expectations. I had started reading for my examinations since two months ago, but it is surprising to see that I have colleagues that find the luxury of time to play as though they forget the stakes that are concerning their success as a Medical student. SOme make the exciuses that they can faoil as their counterparts in other faculties. They are obviously unaware that to stand out, you must act beyond what the ordinary person does.
The desire to stand out, to be extraordinary, and to leave a lasting impact is a universal aspiration. Yet, achieving this often feels elusive, primarily because many of us fall into the trap of mimicking the habits and actions of the ordinary. Thinking of the quote, "If you don't want to be ordinary, don't do what ordinary people do," clearly captures the essence of what it takes to break free from the normal and achieve greatness. A lot is required.
First, whoever wants to stand out must be ready to embrace his or her uniqueness. To break away from the ordinary, it is essential first to recognize and accept your uniqueness. Each person possesses a distinct blend of talents, passions, and perspectives. Instead of conforming to societal norms or following the crowd, identify what makes you different. Celebrate your individuality, and let it guide your actions and decisions. When you lean into your unique attributes, you create a path that is authentically yours, which is the first step toward extraordinary achievement. I our case as Medical student, we are op a unique path. The demand of the career path requires the participant to accept the uniqueness of it.
Secondly, standing out requires that one must take risks. Ordinary people often stay within their comfort zones, fearing failure and avoiding risks. They are afraid if failure. I remember when some people told me "Are you sure you can make it though this career path?" I understand that a lot is involved but I am ready to take the risks. Extraordinary success is rarely achieved without taking significant risks. Stepping into the unknown, trying new things, and accepting the possibility of failure are crucial elements of growth and innovation.
The third thing that will make one live above the ordinary path is to cultivate a growth mindset. A growth mindset, as opposed to a fixed mindset, is the belief that abilities and intelligence can be developed through dedication and hard work. Ordinary people often believe their capabilities are static, leading them to avoid challenges and give up easily. In contrast, extraordinary individuals view challenges as opportunities to learn and grow. They understand that perseverance, effort, and resilience are the keys to unlocking their potential. Extraordinary people must understand that they need to learn and unlearn to get better at their life pursuit.
Fourth thing to do to stand out is to be relentlessly curious. It is often said that curiosity fuels innovation and creativity. Ordinary people may accept things at face value and settle for the status quo, but those who aspire to be extraordinary constantly ask questions and seek deeper understanding. When last did you get curious and ask questions out of the box? Being extraordinary requires that you become a lifelong learner, who is always looking for ways to improve and expand their knowledge. This relentless curiosity will always drives extraordinary people to explore new ideas, challenge conventional wisdom, and discover novel solutions to problems.
Fifth thing to do to live above the ordinary life is to surround yourself with excellence. As students, we read in groups and this spurs you up. Staying along may make you complacent and weak, but surrounding yourself with people that will challenge you to grow is important. Know that the people you surround yourself with have a significant impact on your mindset and actions. Ordinary individuals may settle for relationships that are comfortable but uninspiring. To be extraordinary, seek out and build relationships with people who challenge you, inspire you, and push you to be your best.
Never stop practicing discipline and consistency. My pastor would always say that we achieve greatness by doing little things consistently than doing big things sparingly. Success is not an overnight phenomenon but the result of disciplined, consistent effort over time. Ordinary people may give up when the going gets tough or when progress is slow. Extraordinary individuals understand the power of persistence and discipline.
Focus on Impact, not Recognition. Ordinary people will often seek validation and recognition from others. This can lead to complacency and mediocrity. On the other hand, extraordinary individuals focus on making a meaningful impact, regardless of whether they receive recognition. Their motivation comes from a deep-seated desire to contribute, create value, and leave a positive mark on the world.
I totally agree with my friend that "If you don't want to be ordinary, don't do what ordinary people do". Breaking away from the ordinary requires a conscious effort to think and act differently. Those words have beamed a great lesson in my heart and I am grateful for it and meant to share with friends here. I hope you too can learn.
Do you agree with my thoughts shared above? Let me learn from you too.
