Memories: Santa Maria Key

Searching through my memories I found these photos from 2009.

Time flies by, only once in a while we become aware of that. Oli was so little, we had to carry books and toys wherever we went, even if it was only for a few days.

I remember those vacations in Cayo Santa Maria with great pleasure. It was our first visit to that part of the Cuban geography. It was almost a six-hour bus ride from Havana to Santa Clara, capital of the central province of Villa Clara. Then we took the causeway that extends over the sea for 48 kilometers from Caibarién, a municipality in the same province, to the key.

As a curious fact, I can tell you that this viaduct is the longest of its kind built on the planet. It has more than 40 bridges, which allow maintaining 94% of the original water exchange, thus preserving its characteristics and protecting the environment on which it was built.

Its Canal de los Barcos Bridge, with 350 meters, is the longest bridge in Cuba built over the sea. Its serpentine form contributes to reduce the danger of accidents. It is the Cuban road that links the largest number of keys at once.

The international award "Puente de Alcántara" to the "Best Ibero-American Civil Work" was granted to it in its VII Convocation 1998-2000, being the only Cuban engineering work to achieve such recognition.

We stayed at the Meliá Las Dunas, a nice hotel, quite big. In fact, I think it was the biggest lobby I have ever seen, it was huge.

The sea in this part of the island is just as beautiful. Its waters are crystal clear, turquoise and its sand is very fine and white. It is a joy to be able to enjoy such beautiful beaches.

When our little ones were little indeed... it seems like yesterday but still so many years passed. We also carried books and toys hahaha, there is one soft toy that travelled with us to all the places where we went. And I am sure that soft toy would love to travel to this amazing place and drive through that viaduct with us! 😁

It's been a long time, I miss her...sometimes 🤗. Just in the basket of the baby carriage there was also a soft toy 🤣.

The trip over that viaduct is very exciting, unfortunately I didn't have any good photos of the landscape...they were blurred.

They must have been really amazing memories. I have not had time to go for vacation, but I certainly have to make out more time for myself

It was a nice trip. It is important to dedicate time to rest, to take a vacation, no matter where or how long you go, the important thing is that you feel happy.

You are absolutely right, I am certainly going to give myself one soon

Greetings my friend and thank you for being here at Hive's #tbt Thursdays!. I'm in love with everything I've seen and read here. The bridge looks stunning to me and I imagine it is quite an experience to walk it, but then the hotel facilities and the beautiful beach assure me that Cuba and what it has to offer tourists is pure gold, a wonder in the middle of the Caribbean Sea. I'm glad you found these images, and especially that you share them here. Happy day, hugs to you!...

Thank you for the warm welcome to this Hive's #tbt Thursdays. Cuba has beautiful places and its beaches are some of the most beautiful things it has.

That viaduct is awesome, was the first time we toured it and we were delighted. Have a nice day and a hug back.

WOW 😲. These photos are very nice. I love that little baby here. Can she be my friend? Hahahaha 🤣. Please 🙏 send my regards to her. Tell her that I love her.
Thanks for sharing
