Last Friday the Vox Lucis Choir had a new performance, but this time it was quite peculiar. We decided to bring our music to the patients of the Saturnino Lora Provincial Hospital in order to, for a few moments, make the life of the people who are still admitted to the institution more bearable.
The Vox Lucis Choir was founded on December 22, 2021. In its beginnings, it was the representative choir of the #1 Faculty of Medical Sciences of Santiago de Cuba. However, as many of the medical students had very complicated schedules and could not attend the choir rehearsals, the gap was opening and students from other teachings (myself included) were able to enter.
With only two years of foundation we were invited to the International Choirs Festival Electo Silva in Memoriam, in which we were singing next to professional choirs and still there was no noticeable difference in levels. In addition, we were at the National Festival of Amateur Artists of the FEU (Federation of University Students), where we received the medal in the Choral Music category and also the Grand Prize in all Music categories.
It is always very important for us to continue to surpass ourselves, that's why for this concert we were premiering several works that require a very high rigor of interpretation. Clearly we could not make an "easy" concert, the whole audience deserves to get the best of us. This also means that we should put twice as much effort into our preparation.
At first we wanted to do the concert in the hospital theater, however it is under repair and did not have the necessary conditions to perform the concert there. As for us the obstacles are minor things, we positioned ourselves in one of the central corridors of the hospital, the doctors took out some chairs for the patients and the rest of the staff remained standing.
Among the sacred works, we premiere the works "O Magnum Mysterium" and "Dies Irae" by the composer Michael John Trotta, two works that seem easy to sing in terms of vocal range, but impress with their dynamics and changes of temperament. Once we finished these two pieces, my nerves completely dissipated, because it was the part of the concert that worried me the most.
We continued to perform international works until we reach those that were made in our country. Finally, another super strong premiere was the "I will go to Santiago", a work that we were able to sing with dignity despite its terrible difficulty.
At the end of the day, what we liked the most was to see the faces of the patients and those who accompanied them home when we finished some piece. You could see in their eyes the emotion we managed to convey to them and how they enjoyed music as much as we did. There were people who even cried to the beat of the plays. The fact of touching a person's heart makes singing one of the most beautiful professions that can exist, and above any recognition that can be received, the most important thing is the applause and approval of the audience. I think we ended up being more grateful to them than the other way around.

El pasado viernes el Coro Vox Lucis tuvo una nueva presentación, pero esta vez fue bastante peculiar. Decidimos llevar nuestra música a los pacientes del Hospital Provincial Saturnino Lora para así, por unos instantes, hacer más llevadera la vida de las personas que se mantienen ingresadas en la institución.
El Coro Vox Lucis fue fundado el 22 de diciembre del 2021. En sus inicios, era el coro representativo de la Facultad #1 de Ciencias Médicas de Santiago de Cuba. Sin embargo, como muchos de los estudiantes de medicina tenían horarios muy complicados y no podían asistir a los ensayos del coro, la brecha se fue abriendo y pudieron entrar estudiantes de otras enseñanzas (yo incluido).
Con solo dos años de fundado fuimos invitados al Festival Internacional de Coros Electo Silva in Memoriam, en el que estuvimos cantando al lado de coros profesionales y aún así no se notó una diferencia de niveles. Además, estuvimos en el Festival Nacional de Artistas Aficionados de la FEU (Federación de Estudiantes Universitarios), en el que recibimos la medalla en la categoría de Música Coral y además el Gran Premio dentro de todas las categorías de Música.
Para nosotros siempre es muy importante el continuar superándonos, por eso para este concierto estuvimos estrenando varias obras que exigen un rigor de interpretación muy alto. Claramente no podíamos hacer un concierto "fácil", todo el público merece llevarse lo mejor de nosotros. Esto también significa que debemos esforzarnos el doble en nuestra preparación.
En un inicio quisimos hacer el concierto en el teatro del hospital, sin embargo este está en reparación y no tenía las condiciones necesarias para realizar allí el concierto. Como para nosotros los obstáculos son cosas menores, nos posicionamos en uno de los pasillos centrales del hospital, los doctores sacaron algunas sillas para los pacientes y el resto del personal se mantuvo de pie.
Dentro de las obras sacras, estrenamos las obras "O Magnum Mysterium" y "Dies Irae" del compositor Michael Jhon Trotta, dos obras que en cuestión de rango vocal parecen fáciles de cantar, pero impresionan por sus dinámicas y cambios de temperamento. Una vez terminamos estas dos obras, mis nervios se disiparon por completo, pues era la parte del concierto que más me preocupaba.
Continuamos interpretando obras internacionales hasta llegar a las que fueron hechas en nuestro país. Para finalizar, otro estreno súper fuerte lo constituyó el "Iré a Santiago", obra que pudimos cantar dignamente a pesar de su espantosa dificultad.
Al final del día, lo que más nos gustó fue ver la cara de los pacientes y quienes los acompañaban casa vez que terminábamos alguna pieza. Se veía en sus ojos la emoción que lográbamos transmitirles y cómo disfrutaban de la música tanto como nosotros. Hubo personas que incluso lloraban al compás de las obras. El hecho de tocar el corazón de una persona hace que cantar sea una de las profesiones más hermosas que puede existir, y por encima de cualquier reconocimiento que se pueda recibir, lo más importante es el aplauso y la aprobación del público. Creo que terminamos más agradecidos nosotros con ellos que en sentido contrario.
