THE EXAM EFFECT

Exams can be really tough for most people if not all, no matter how prepared they think they are for an examination. Why? It’s not because they don’t know what to write when they see the question but the preparation towards sitting for that exam is where the real stress comes from. You will have so many fears and uncertainties because you are not sure of the kind of questions the examiner has in store for you. So, the least you can do is just read as broad and wide as you can.

My exams started on the 13th of January and so far, it has been an interesting journey for me. There were some things that I never thought that I’d be able to do but then, somehow I managed to get through them. It can only be God. I have also come to realize that some of my lifestyle choices has changed too just so I can accommodate the new norm of what the examination period brings. One major part of my lifestyle that is greatly affected is my diet.

On a normal day, I don’t take snacks regularly but that has changed now because I realize that I get hungry very quickly and the only way I can compensate my brain to keep reading is by providing it with more glucose and one thing that does that is snacks. They do that job really well. I particularly love the munchkins biscuit because it has a great taste and it is filled with quite a lot of sugar. In as much as I know that this is not healthy for me, I try to also minimize the intake of it and prepare good food when I can.

This biscuit will easily digest to give me glucose which I will also use almost immediately but the problem is the amount of fats inside. The fats will take a longer time to be digested and even be used up which is a problem. It’s a problem because I don’t do exercises regularly as I use to and I just keep building up fats. It would have been a little better if I can even starve myself but that too is hard because my brain needs energy to keep going strong. Luckily for me, my exams will soon be ending and all of these unhealthy lifestyle will be put on hold.

During this period of examination, I also try my best to stay hydrated as often as possible to help my body function well too. I have to sit in a particular place for a long time and I always make sure to take a walk to my examination venue to get my muscles busy, hehe. And since the weather here is mostly hot, I try to take my bath before leaving for my exams which is always happening in the afternoon.

And the last thing that I have also tried to improve on is my sleeping habits. Unlike before when I sleep really late, now I sleep early and for longer time frame so as to give my body the rest it needs. I know that for some, now should be a time when I should sleep late but no, I know how my body works and I believe this is what is best for me. I can stay up late on days when I don’t have exams but I always believe that once my exams are here, it’s better to get good rest just so I don’t face any mental stress.

That’s basically how my lifestyle has changed for the past weeks and I’m hoping it gets better from here. So what about you, how does your lifestyle get affected during the periods when you sit for exams?
