Pues sí, ese auto viejo muy icónico, usado en muchas oportunidades para este tipo de aventuras sería mi hogar en los próximos meses? Años? Quién sabe…
My story begins like this.
One day, bored of my daily routine, I was watching videos on YouTube, and I found many accounts of people who traveled this way, some of them had been doing it for years and had traveled many places and countries. I watched the videos of "Verde Por Dentro" and "Al son de mi furgón", both from Spain and I really liked their content. Apart from showing you their travels, adventures and so on, they explained how they built their vehicles from scratch with the idea of converting them into their home and thus being able to travel with the basics and be self-sustainable.
Mi historia comienza así.
Un día, aburrida de mi rutina diaria veía videos por YouTube, y conseguí muchas cuentas de personas que viajaban de esta manera, algunos tenían años haciéndolo y habían recorrido muchos lugares y países. Veía los videos de “Verde Por Dentro” y “Al son de mi furgón”, ambos de España y me gustaba muchísimo su contenido. Aparte que te mostraban sus viajes, aventuras y demás, te explicaban cómo construían sus vehículos desde cero con la idea de convertirlos en su casa y así poder viajar con lo básico y ser auto sustentables.
THE PLANNING
I began to analyze some of the pros:

And some cons:

The danger
The truth is that I didn't even see those cons, I only looked at the pros I had and by that time in 2018 I got organized, gathered the money and started looking for my best option. I got the one on the internet that I fell in love with at first sight, traveled to Santiago, did the paperwork and now to return to my home (1:30 hours away from Santiago).
LA PLANIFICACIÓN
Empecé a analizar algunos de los pros:

Y algunos contras:
Me podía quedar accidentada

La verdad esos contras ni los vi, solo me fijé en los pros que tenÍa y para ese momento en 2018 me organicé, reuní el dinero y empecé a buscar mi mejor opción. Conseguí esa por internet que me enamoré a primera vista, viajé a Santiago, hice el trámite y ahora a regresar a mi casa (1:30 horas de distancia de Santiago).
THE TRIP HOME
Everything was perfect and when I was 20 minutes away, I had an accident at a toll booth: the gearbox had jammed. Anyway, I was lucky that a man with a tow truck was there and took me to my destination leaving me to pay him the next day, because yes, I had no more money. 🤣
EL VIAJE A CASA
Todo perfecto y cuando iba a 20min de camino, me quedé accidentada en un peaje: la caja de cambios se había trancado. En fin, tuve la suerte que un señor con una grúa estaba ahí y me llevó a mi destino dejando que le pagara al día siguiente, porque sí, ya no tenía dinero. 🤣
STARTING THE ARRANGEMENTS
After a few days, I started to measure the inside of the Kombi, because I had to design it to my liking, to be able to travel happily (at least at the beginning). And at the same time I took it to have the box fixed and general maintenance of everything it needed, if I was going to travel in it, it had to be at 100%.
EMPEZANDO LOS ARREGLOS
Luego de unos días, empecé a medir por dentro la Kombi, porque debía diseñarla a mi gusto, para poder viajar feliz (por lo menos al principio). Y al mismo tiempo la llevé a que le arreglaran la caja y le hicieran mantenimiento general de todo lo que necesitara, si iba a viajar en ella, debía estar al 100%.
THE LIST
Then with the measurements I made my wish list:
- A hippie-style toilet, with liquids going to one side and solids to the other, thus avoiding bad smells to a great extent.
- A comfortable size bed that I could store and fold easily. I'd seen a video that doing that every day is exhausting, so the easier the system, the better.
- A container where the water would fall so I could half shower with a shower head that I was going to put on the ceiling.
- A kitchen area, with a two-place stove and a small dishwasher. It would have a lid for chopping food before cooking.
- A space for a mini refrigerator.
- A mini-counter for eating as comfortably as possible.
- A few shelves to store the few clothes you can wear.
- A hidden drawer to store the appliances used for the installations.
- A small overhead water tank.
- I needed electricity, so I would place some solar panels with their power converter and deep cycle batteries.
- And for cold areas and to keep my sewage tank water and drinking water from freezing, I had researched a water heater that was used with a heating element.
With this super wish list already a bit ambitious, the only thing left to do was to design.
So I started measuring everything, and then got down to work, sitting for hours and hours until I achieved a final result.
LA LISTA
Ya luego con las medidas hice mi lista de deseos:
- Un WC al mejor estilo hippie, que los líquidos se fuesen para un lado y los sólidos para otro, así evitaría en gran parte los malos olores.
- Una cama tamaño cómodo que pudiera guardar y plegar fácilmente. Por ahí había visto un video que hacer eso todos los días es agotador, por lo que mientras más fácil era el sistema, mucho mejor.
- Un recipiente donde cayera el agua para poder medio ducharme con una ducha que iba a poner en el techo.
- Un área de cocina, con una cocina de dos puestos y un lavaplatos pequeño. Que tuviese una tapa para picar los alimentos antes de cocinarlos.
- Un espacio para un mini refrigerador.
- Un mini mesón para comer lo más cómoda posible.
- Unos estantes para guardar la poca ropa que pueda llevar.
- Un cajón oculto para guardar los artefactos usados para las instalaciones.
- Un pequeño tanque de agua aéreo.
- Necesitaba electricidad, por lo que colocaría unos paneles solares con su convertidor de corriente y baterías de ciclo profundo.
- Y para las zonas frías y evitar que se me congelara el agua de depósito de aguas servidas y el agua potable, había investigado un calentador de agua que se usaba con una resistencia.
Ya con esta súper lista de deseos un poco ambiciosa, solo quedaba diseñar.
Así que inicié midiendo todo, y luego manos a la obra, sentada horas y horas hasta que logré un resultado final.
THE DESIGN/EL DISEÑO
After having everything "coldly calculated" I had to think about the first thing: insulation and protection before furnishing. I already knew that hot and cold days were coming, so to avoid dying of one or the other, I bought an insulating fabric, both acoustic and thermal. Before that, I first painted the inside of the brasswork with a black anticorrosive. It was very important, I needed to protect my house as much as possible.
I also bought some accessories that were missing, such as some light beacons, some levers for the glass, and I put them on. Then I glued the insulating TV. I bought the wood and I also bought a hinged roof made of fiberglass material. I had researched everything, I had the contact who would make the hinges, I had the material, I bought new tires, accessories, even the spare tire lining and everything else I could.
Luego de tener todo “fríamente calculado” debía pensar en lo primero: el aislamiento y la protección antes de amoblar. Ya sabía que venían días de calor y de frío, así que para evitar un poco morirme de uno u otro, compré una tela aislante, tanto acústica como térmica. Antes de eso, primero pinté por dentro la latonería con un anticorrosivo negro. Era muy importante, necesitaba proteger lo más posible mi casa.
También compré algunos accesorios que le faltaban como unos faros de luz, unas palancas para el vidrio, y se los fui colocando. Luego le pegué la tele aislante. Compré la madera y también compré un techo que se subía con bisagras, de material fibra de vidrio. Había investigado todo, tenía el contacto que me haría las bisagras, tenía el material, compré los neumáticos nuevos, accesorios, hasta el forro del neumático de repuesto y todo lo que más iba pudiendo.
In 2019, the pandemic hit, my plans were getting darker and darker by the day, until I realized I wasn't going to be able to travel like this for who knows how long.
The sad day came when I had to make the decision to sell it. In the end it was not so sad because the gentlemen who bought it for me were retired and dreamed of doing the same thing... so one day they arrived and took it with them, full of illusion. They traveled 3 hours to their destination, and KIWI behaved excellently.
Nowadays I don't keep in touch with them, but I guess they did manage to fix it and fulfill their dream.

En 2019, llegó la pandemia, mis planes se fueron tiñendo cada día más oscuros, hasta que me di cuenta que no iba a poder viajar así quién sabe por cuánto tiempo.
El día triste llegó cuando tuve que tomar la decisión de venderla. Al final no fue tan triste porque los señores que me la compraron, estaban jubilados y soñaban con hacer lo mismo… así que un día llegaron y se la llevaron ilusionados. Viajaron 3 horas a su destino, y KIWI se portó excelentemente bien.
Hoy en día no mantengo contacto con ellos, pero supongo que sí lograron arreglarla y cumplir su sueño.
