As I sit here, drenched in Dhaka’s relentless rain, I am reminded of a moment just a few days ago. The mercury soared to 39 degrees, but with the humidity, it felt like an oppressive 43.
The city, a labyrinth of highrises and concrete, seemed to press down on me from all sides. Amidst this urban expanse, as I rode a rickshaw, the lyrics of "Sohorer Ushnotomo Dine" by Moheener Ghoraguli echoed in my mind:
"শহরের উষ্ণতম দিনে
পিচগলা রোদ্দুরে বৃষ্টির বিশ্বাস
তোমায় দিলাম আজ।"
This song captures the essence of my longing—hoping for rain on the hottest day, a promise of relief and beauty amidst adversity. I found myself wishing for someone who could offer me that promise, someone who could transform my worst days into the best ones with a simple vow. The juxtaposition of this wish against the backdrop of Dhaka’s concrete jungle was poignant.
With its endless sea of buildings and lack of green spaces, Dhaka often feels suffocating. The city’s hustle and bustle, the constant construction, and the never-ending traffic contribute to a sense of being trapped. In these moments, the need for a promise of something better, something greener and more peaceful, becomes even more acute.
I crave the assurance that amid this urban chaos, there will be moments of tranquility and joy. Just as the rain today brings a temporary respite from the heat, I yearn for a constant in my life—a promise of happiness and serenity even when everything seems bleak.
The rain today is a reminder that such promises are possible. It brings the scent of wet earth, the sound of droplets dancing on rooftops, and a fleeting sense of calm. It is in these moments that I realize the importance of having someone who can hold my hand and promise me that no matter how challenging life gets, there will be days of beauty and joy.
Dhaka might be a concrete jungle, but within this jungle, there is room for hope and dreams. There is a need for green spaces, for fresh air, and for the simple joys that nature can bring. As I watch the rain fall, I hold on to the belief that amidst the urban sprawl, there can be moments of natural beauty and personal happiness.
