I like sniffing catnip a lot, so I went know kore about this herb and how it affect us cats and will share with you what I learned.
Catnip brings several benefits to us cats. You must have already found a toy that had this herb or you must have heard about it.
The smell of this special herb us extremely happy.
Catnip releases an aroma that makes us fell more cheerful, happy and or relaxed. Depend on cats tolerance to it. Some don't like, others feels great.
Sam for example don't like mich as I do. He sniffles a little bit and relax. Misha liked to lick it and don't mind so much to the smell... But me, meowow!!! I feel excited 😺
However, there are taboos regarding the offer of this herb to us. Many think that Catnip is bad, but it only brings benefits being used in the correct form and amount.
The euphoric and agitated effects are caused by a substance which does not harm us. When inhaled, stimulates the cat's olfactory bulb and activates the amygdala and hypothalamus, organs responsible for the body's emotions and reactions.
So, your cat predatory instinct is stimulated, making it run much more and releasing all its tension.
Contrary to what many think, this herb is not addictive, it only loses its effect when used for a long time or in large amounts.
The use of Catnip can help your cat fell more relaxed during outsider's visits at their territory and help have more fun and play, developing a more peaceful and happy behavior.
It should be used once a week, so as not to lose its effect, and it can be used in various ways, such as scratching posts, wands, or any of your cat's favorite toys. My favorite toy is the Flying cat and I love to play with it. Even woth bo catnip.
What i feel after sniffing catnip:
- I Shake my head and tail more;
- Scratch faster and strong;
- Stay hyperactivity for few minutes.
These effects start to appear right after the first contact with the herb, and I fell agitated for about 10 minutes after the peak of the inhalation.
Some Cats, like Misha, may feel like ingesting the herb and will also feel much calmer and more relaxed. However, prevent from eating a lot, as its may can cause nausea leading to vomiting and diarrhea.
The most common way to use Catnip is on scratching posts and spread the weed in the environment where cat spend most time.
I also have a toys that has a compartment inside full of catnip, this way, I cant eat it and help me he feel much calmer.
This is the difference between me and Sam. While he don't like catnip. I like it very much.
Like Sam, some cats are immune to the effects of Catnip, but that doesn't mean he has a problem. They just are more resistant and are not as euphoric or relaxed with the use of this herb.
