Lager and Stout

in #hive-1877192 months ago

Another week gone by and two more beers drank and reviewed. For this #Beersaturday post I'll be reviewing a lager and a stout. Cheers everyone!

Petes Lager

Brewery: Bobcaygeon Brewing Company
Origin: Peterborough ON Canada
Style: Lager
Abv: 4.0%

Marketing: Stone grey and burgandy color scheme. Local hockey team imagery - Peterborough Pete's (I looked them up). The beer must have been brewed as a tribute to the team, is my guess. On the other side is the brewery's standard brand imagery - Loon mascot and bold lable writing. Its not my taste of artwork but it's a fine can. It stood out on the shelf so it did it's job.

Color: Yellow straw colored beer with a a decent head on it.

Nose: Bread and cereals. Very fresh smelling.

Taste: Tangy and bitter. Long lasting finish. Not a lot of sweetness. Mildly dry.

Texture: A good amount of carbonation. Big bubbles. Airy mouthfeel. Light bodied.

Impression: Quite good. Very fresh tasting to me which always a good thing. More on the bitter side but thats fine. A bit boring but I enjoyed it quite a bit. I generally like the beers coming out of the Bobcaygeon Brewery. They are typically fresh tasting with good, high quality ingredients. This one is no exception. I'd buy it again.

Black Coal Stout

Brewery: Railway City Brewing Co
Origin: St Thomas ON Canada
Style: American Stout
Abv: 6.0%
IBU: 30
SRM: 30

Marketing: Black and grey can with yellow accents that really pop. Geometric designs throughout no doubt to symbolically represent the coal that the name is based on. The company's branding logo present as well. Some additional info about the beer on the side and an Ontario Craft Brewers badge. I like the can a lot. It looks like a Stout beer would belong inside.

Color: This beer poured as black as ink with a frothy mocha colored head on top. I love seeing this color of beer.

Nose: Strong aroma of cocao, semi-sweet chocolate in the background and generic roasted notes present, as one would expect. Very strong and pleasant nose to me.

Taste: Mildly sweet upfront, quite tangy and with a strong bitter finish. Cocoa and chocolate notes again. Lots a great flavor.

Texture: Strong carbonation. Tiny sharp bubbles on the tongue and silky mouthfeel underneath it all. Medium bodied.

Impression: To me this beer is a quintessential Stout beer. It fits the style perfectly. It's bold and has a very strong taste and smell to it. I'd say that this is among my favorite Stout beers. I've boughten it many times and will continue to do so. I've been to the Brewery and took a tour with the brewer - this was many many years ago. He was an older gentleman that used to work for one of the major Breweries, I forget which one. He was as bitter as this beer but an interesting chap nonetheless and I remember enjoying listening to him talk about beer and rant about the large corporate breweries and the tax system on alcohol. It was a fun and informative time. Cheers to Railway city Brewing Co and this amazing beer!

looks tasty and I guess our black beer fan @louis88 will love it

It was a good one. Quintessential for the stout category in my opinion. 👍

Black beers are usually bitter so I’d prefer that light one
It looks good for me to try

Sometimes it's the opposite I find, depends on the style of beer. Nonetheless the light one was quite good so nice choice.

Both beers look amazing! But the stout wins this for me; I would love to have a sipe from it! The deep dark and thick-looking head really attracts me, and I can smell it through the screen. When a brewery does a good stout, it is always a win in my opinion!

This is one of my favorite stouts. It's rich, robust and lots of flavor 😋. Definitely a good one.

Oh man, I would love to taste one! I cannot remember when last I had a stout looking that good. Usually, stouts here in my country are a bit on the milder (dare I say "weaker") side. I miss these big and robust stouts!

Nothing worse than a weak stout. So disappointing 😕

For sure, it is some of the worst disappointments out there! Especially if it watery and not full bodied.

Agreed! 💯

Surprises me every time to see familiar regional brands in some other beerologist’s post!

Bobcaygeon always reminds me of camping and cottaging up in the region. Clean fresh beer and their ipa is not bad either.

Railway city is closer to my neck of the woods. I don’t see it on the shelves here very often for some reason but it has always been good. Planning a day trip to tour the brewery at some point.

Solid beers for what will hopefully be a solid weekend for you my friend.

The Railway City Brewery was quite small when I visited it. That was probably 8 years ago or more. It may have grown since then though. It wasn't an amazing tour but I enjoyed the information.

Have a good weekend as well 👍
