This might be a short one for this week's #Beersaturday. I was pretty sick this week with some sort of bug that I no doubt picked up at the hospital I work at. It's the season after all. Lots of covid, and lots of Rhino virus going around. I drank the beer in this post last weekend and haven't had another beer since as of yet. Nonetheless, let me tell you about this beauty from Wellington Brewery. It was a gem.
Special Pale Ale
Brewery: Wellington Brewery
Origin: Guelph ON Canada
Style: Special Pale Ale (SPA)
Abv: 4.5%
IBU: 22
SRM: 14
Serving Temp: 5-8°C
Gravity: OG 10.5°P - FG 2.2°P (For the real beer enthusiasts nerds)
Marketing: A metallic yellow (or brushed brass) colored can with bold black lettering that really pops. Characteristic Wellington Boot brand logo prominantly displayed. Subtle showcase of a few medals that the beer has won in competition and some extra information about the beer printed on the reverse side. A very simple but effective can in my opinion.
Color: The beer poured a coppery brown color with a cream colored head made up of hearty bubbles. It's nice when the head doesn't just dissappear after a few short moments. I also like it when the foam leaves a nice lacing on the glass.
Nose: Malty scent with some aromatics from the hops. I got grassy hay and some subtle floral notes coming through. Maybe a little bread dough as well. Very pleasant nose.
Taste: The beer was mainly dry up front with a nice tanginess and then a sharp bitter finish. Good flavor overall. I could taste both the malt and the hops notes.
Texture: Very good carbonation that lasted the entire tasting session. A bit of a watery mouthfeel underneath. It felt light bodied to me.
Impression: This was a very good beer to me overall. I happen to like the Wellington Brewery quite a bit. It had a nice amount of flavor without being overpowering. It Tasted fresh and crisp. For me it was more of a summer beer but still great on a gloomy cold December day like the one i drank it on. I would definitely drink this one again.
I drank it while I cooked BBQ style ribs that night. It was a good combination a the ribs turned out pretty good as well.
