Este título podría apuntar a cualquiera de los deportes que por estos días hacen explotar nuestros corazones de emoción, tenemos competencias de todo tipo, comenzó la Eurocopa con "mucha tela para cortar" como diría mi abuela, en pocos días comienza la Copa América y también allí tenemos puestas nuestras miradas; en un mes el gran evento multideportivo de los JJOO dará su espectáculo de cada 4 años.
Pero no voy a hablar de fútbol, voy a comentar sobre el resultado y algo más del tercer major del año del golf, soy casi el único que habla de este deporte y no puedo dejar pasar el mencionar la definición de uno de los 4 torneos más importantes que se disputan cada año en el máximo circuito de golf del mundo.
Como mencioné en una publicación anterior, se disputó desde el jueves 13 hasta el domingo 16 el US Open, el tercer torneo integrante del Grand Slam de golf y la definición no pudo ser más emocionante.
Comenzó el domingo, 4ta. y última jornada para completar los 72 hoyos en que se pactan todos los torneos del circuito de la PGA, 4 jornadas de 18 hoyos cada una. Al inicio de las acciones Bryson DeChambeau lideraba con 203 golpes o -7 respecto al par de campo que era para la cancha Nro. 2 de Pinehurts de 70 golpes. El norteamericano era perseguido a 2 golpes por el francés Matthieu Pavon y a 3 golpes por el norirlandés Rory MacIlroy y el también norteamericano Patrick Cantlay.
Durante toda la larga jornada se notó el nerviosismo de los jugadores que se hizo más y más complicado de sobrellevar a medida que avanzaban los hoyos, muchos consideran este torneo el más difícil y competitivo y eso se nota en el agotamiento mental que lleva a cometer errores y caer en las diversas trampas que el mismo propone a lo largo de sus 7611 yardas de longitud.
Bryson que prácticamente no había cometido errores en las salidas de los 18 hoyos del día previo, no podía acertar el fairway en esta última ronda, lo que lo llevaba a tener que ejecutar sus segundos tiros desde posiciones difíciles y entre el pasto alto y la arena que es una constante si no se acierta el camino correcto. Por otra parte, Rory MacIlroy jugaba con todas las ganas de cortar la mala racha de más de 10 años sin lograr un título de Grand Slam, algo impensado en sus primeros años como golfista profesional cuando en poco tiempo logró alzarse con 4 de estos torneos mayores y se vislumbraba que sería la estrella rutilante que reemplazaría Tiger Woods en tan alto pedestal, eso no ocurrió, pero siempre continuó siendo un gran jugador que no pudo reafirmar su carrera con estos torneos, es la única materia que debe en tan destacada trayectoria.
Lo cierto es que, con altibajos de varios perseguidores, al final solo quedaban dos que a la vista de los scores iban a definir el torneo: Rory y Bryson, este último cometió varios errores que lo llevaron a perder toda la ventaja que llevaba al comienzo del día y más, faltando 3 hoyos la ventaja era para MacIlroy que le llevaba 2 golpes, pero como dije, el peso de 10 años de frustraciones se hizo notar y el norirlandés perdió esa ventaja con errores propios, fallando putts muy cortos que le hubieran asegurado la victoria o al menos poder dirimir el título en hoyos suplementarios en caso de empate. Se puede decir que el solo le entregó el torneo al norteamericano, o no tanto porque este hizo casi lo imposible en el último hoyo para quedarse con el título, luego de una mala salida que lo llevó a tener que realizar el segundo tiro desde una posición absolutamente incómoda, entre ramas de árboles y un piso mezcla de arena, mechones de pasto y raíces y que provocó que se metiera en nuevas dificultadas al quedar depositada su pelota en un bunker de arena a casi 50 metros del hoyo, su tercer tiro fue algo espectacular que dejó la pelota a poco más de un metro de la bandera. Con el nerviosismo evidente en su rostro y en su lenguaje corporal, pudo embocar desde allí sellando el par en el hoyo que le aseguraba la primera colocación con un golpe de ventaja.
Bryson DeChambeau ganó un nuevo torneo de Grand Slam, el segundo en su carrera y su segundo US Open, el primero fue en el año 2020. El nacido en California hace 30 años consigue de esta manera reafirmar que es un gran jugador que ha provocado grandes cambios en su físico, en su forma de jugar y creo que también en su carácter; apodado "el científico" por las innovaciones provocadas para convertirse en un jugador de gran nivel, lo han llevado en otras épocas a declaraciones polémicas como por ejemplo decir que con la distancia que lograba con sus golpes, Augusta National para el pasaba a ser un campo más corto y más sencillo. La cancha fundada por Boby Jones le pagó semejante atrevimiento con no dejarlo ganar jamás. Quizás ahora, con declaraciones menos ostentosas y un juego corto más pulido se haya redimido y en una de esas, el año próximo Augusta se olvide del insulto y sea más benevolente.
Esta victoria hizo recordar a otra por este mismo torneo, pero ocurrida 25 años atrás, quizás por el gran parecido físico entre DeChambeau y el ganador de la edición 1999, Payne Steward. Ese gran jugador que se vestía como los golfistas de principios de siglo XX, como distintivo particular y también como homenaje a esos primeros jugadores que sentaron las bases del golf actual. Pocos días luego de obtener esa gran victoria, Payne Steward falleció en un ridículo accidente aéreo.
Un párrafo aparte para Rory MacIlroy, este ha sido un durísimo golpe para su autoestima, sabe que perdió el, no le ganaron. Quizás esto lo lleve a replantearse muchas cosas, aunque su juego continúa siendo de enorme nivel, el problema no pasa por ahí sino por su cabeza, sus demonios internos no lo dejan en paz.
Solo queda un torneo para concluir el Grand Slam de golf, el más antiguo y tradicional torneo: el abierto británico que se desarrollará el próximo mes de julio en el Royal Troon Golf Club en la costa oeste de Escocia.
Aguardo impaciente este cierre que como siempre promete nuevas emociones y un campo difícil con la amenaza latente de la inclemencia climática que pueden convertirlo en una verdadera tortura para los golfistas.

The truth is that, with the ups and downs of several pursuers, in the end, there were only two who, because of the scores, were going to define the tournament: Rory and Bryson, the latter made several mistakes that led him to lose all the advantage he had at the beginning. of the day and more, with 3 holes remaining the advantage was for MacIlroy who was 2 strokes ahead, but as I said, the weight of 10 years of frustrations made itself felt and the Northern Irishman lost that advantage with his own mistakes, missing very short putts that would have assured victory or at least being able to settle the title in extra holes in the event of a tie. It can be said that he alone handed the tournament to the American, or not so much because he did almost the impossible on the last hole to win the title, after a bad start that led him to have to take the second shot from a position uncomfortable, between tree branches and a floor mixed with sand, tufts of grass and roots and which caused him to get into new difficulties when his ball was deposited in a sand bunker almost 50 meters from the hole, his third shot was something spectacular that left the ball just over a meter from the flag.
