Hello everyone! This is Zak Ludick from Cape Town, South Africa and this is Warhammer 40,000!
About a week to go and it shall be the Warhammer 40k Nationals tournament hosted in Paarl, Cape Town. I have been playing lost of games of 40k with my Horde Wolves (Vanguard Strikeforce) for the Slowgrow and I thought to myself that they would be fun to play in the Nationals since this sort of Space Wolf army will probably not be allowed to be used in another Nationals if I follow the trend of the way that Games Workshop is updating Codexes.
So what does this all mean?
Well, during the course of the Slow Grow I have been playing my Space Wolves Horde army, the Vanguard Strikeforce. Basically 6 x 15 man Blood Claw squads, 3x led by Lieutenants and 3x led by Librarians, plus 2x Long Fang Packs wielding Lascannons.
They have been doing fairly well, or so I thought. Coming up against my friend Nicholas Roric with his fine-tuned Death Guard, I saw my ass. I also had a game against Wynand Mostert and similarly, the Horde got shot to pieces.
I was then tempted to reach for my true veteran army, the Ironwolves. I have been playing Mechanized Space Wolves since 3rd Edition... this army is a Prehistoric Crocodile army. It evolves very slowly because it is basically... perfect at what it does.
It shoots the sh*t out of most armies and then follows up with assaults from a few Space Wolf units supported by Dreadnoughts. With the 10th Edition Space Marine Codex, I run this army as an Ironstorm Spearhead. And thus, with plenty tanks and Dreadnoughts in my army, I see the immediate advantage of this!
So I decided to put the question up to STATISTICS as it seems my Ironpriests would do.
Ironwolves vs Hordewolves Winrates
During the Slowgrow I played games at 500pts, 750pts, 1000pts, 1500pts, 1750pts and 2000pts. The game is played in a competitive sense at 2000pts.
The Horde Wolves played a total of 22 games and had 15 wins, with 7 losses. This puts their total winrate on 68.18%. I have played only 4 games at 2000pts with them and lost two of those (and against more seasoned opponents) and thus 50% winrate.
Meanwhile, since the start of 10th Edition played 16 games at 2000pts, so less than the Hordewolves but far more at "full-kit" 2000pts. Of those, they have won 14 games and lost 2. This puts them on a 87.5% Winrate!
Additionally, those losses specifically came from Bernard Marchand when we were competing for 1st place in a 1 Day Tournament and from Joerich Stander when we were competing for 1st place in a 2 Day Tournament (I ended 4th place).
So the proved track record of the Ironwolves are statistically, factually higher...
So I went to the hobby store last night to play against an Aeldari player... The points for the game were 81 - 62 in my favor.
Thus another win for the Ironwolves.
This puts them at 15 wins out of 17 and this 88.13% winrate...
We have a 5 day tournament coming up. IF I were to get an 88.13% winrate over 5 games then it should be 4 wins and 1 loss with a percentage chance for 5 wins... however I would be happy with 3 wins and 2 losses.
I think the Hordewolves were lining themselves up for a 3 wins, 2 losses at best and 3 losses and 2 wins as a more likely result.
So...
The Ironwolves are going to Nationals!
