Hello everyone! Zak Ludick here from Cape Town, South Africa and this is a Warhammer 40k - The Great Unit Review Wheel! post!
Now known as the Unit Review Library!
What is it all about? It is not there to just give a stat. It is there to give MY review of the unit!
Also this has become quite the Challenge! With so many units to review in the game the consensus in the hobby community is that I will not have enough time to review all of the Datasheets before the new edition of Warhammer 40,000 came out.
I should have started when 10th edition launched!
468 days since the start of 10th Edition.
This is Review #150, I am 318 reviews behind!
January 2025 we are expecting Astra Militarum and Aeldari codexes as explained Here, so time to focus on THOSE Datasheets!
Astra Militarum, Ogryn Bodyguard
10th Edition Index
What are Ogryn you ask?
Well, the Imperium of Man does NOT allow Xenos and it does NOT allow mutants! So... in a nutshell, they are human, of a kind. The Ogryns are one of a few different kind of Abhuman races. They are genetically descendant of the Human race but instead of mutation giving them their appearance or abilities, it is evolution that brought them to this point.
Usually the world the people were living on has something to do with it but in general, Ogryn are seen as a stable sub-human race not touched by Chaos.
These guys are massive, strong, tough, dumb... and like the name Ogryn... yes, this is pretty much an Ogre but in 40k.
There are FOUR Datasheets that have Ogryn on them in the Index. This one is a Bodyguard which you attach permanently to a Command Squad of the Astra Militarum. They may be dumb, but they can be extremely loyal.
A Bodyguard costs you 40pts and there is no single box to build one, this one pictured above comes from the Nork Deddog box... more about him later!
Let's check his stats!
Stats
Movement 6"
Toughness 6
Save 5+(armor/invul/Feel No Pain)
Wounds 6
Ld 7+
OC 1
As Tough as a Custodes and with as many Wounds as a Shield Captain. A pity about the armor. We can fix that though
Weapons
Standard weapons are the Huge Knife, Ripper Gun and Close Combat Weapon.
The Huge Knife can be exchanged for either a Brute Shield or a Slabshield.
The Ripper Gun can be exchanged for either a Bullgryn Maul or a Grenadier Guantlet.
Ranged:
Ripper Gun
18" Range, 3 Shots, Hitting on 4+. S5, AP-1 and 2 Damage each.
Sustained Hits 1 (Crits to Hit on a 6 generate additional hits.)
This is practically a half range Heavy Bolter!)
Grenadier Gauntlet
18" Range, D6 Shots, Hitting on 4+. S4, AP0 and 1 Damage each.
Blast (This weapon gets +1 Attack per 5 models in the enemy unit, rounding down)
Melee:
Close Combat Weapon
4 Attacks, Hitting on 3+. S6, AP 0 and 1 Damage each.
Huge Knife
6 Attacks, Hitting on 3+. S8, AP -1 and 2 Damage each.
Ripper Gun
5 Attacks, Hitting on 3+. S6, AP -1 and 1 Damage each.
Bullgryn Maul
5 Attacks, Hitting on 3+. S7, AP -1 and 2 Damage each.
Wargear Abilities
Brute Shield
The bearer has a 4+ Invul save.
Slabshield
The Bearer gains +1 Wound.
Abilities
Feel No Pain 6+ (When a wound is allocated to this model, roll a dice, on a 6 ignore that wound.
Loyal Protector
At the start of the Battle, attach this Bodyguard to a Command Squad. He is not part of that unit and changes their Starting Strength. If this unit cannot be attached in this way, it counts as destroyed. He counts as 3 models in a Transport.
Ogryn Bodyguard
Officer models in the same unit as the Ogryn Bodyguard have a 4+ Feel No Pain.
Redoubled Loyalty
While this unit contains an Officer model that has lost one or wound, the Ogryn gets +1 to the to Hit Roll and +1 to the to Wound roll in melee!
Thoughts
I feel that this is a great use for 40pts in a list where you don't know what else to do. If you play against a lot of opponents with Snipers and Assassins, the Ogryn can keep them alive!
Another use for the Bodyguard would be if the enemy seems to have fast units that always assault and try and catch your Command Squad units, then this is a good reaction unit.
Another thing to note is that the Ogryn Bodyguard is not a Character unit, which means you could feasibly allocate wounds to him before other soldiers in the unit. This may be a good idea to keep certain staff alive. Not all of them, let some of the less important die and if it is essential to keep the Medic and the Vox Master alive, then the Ogryn can protect them too!
The drawback here is taking wounds on the Average Toughness of 3 then. You might as well then use the Brute Shield to give him the 4+ Invul and 6+ FNP built in to try block some damage.
To me there are two loadouts I like: Rippergun and Huge Knife or Brute Shield and Bullgryn Maul... a distant third option is Brute Shield and Rippergun.
That makes 6 Astra Militarum Datasheets Reviewed putting them on 6.74 Completed. The total Completed is 15.44% Complete! Can I review them all?!
Thank you for reading!
