Good day. My name is Zak Ludick and I am getting ready to play in a large Warhammer 40,000 tournament on the 2nd and 3rd of December.
The path to victory is paved on the flagstones of understanding. Knowing your own rules and the rules of your opponent is crucial to knowing where to place what units and what to watch out for.
Of course, it is vitally important to know what it is that you need to damage on your opponent's army early on and what it is in your army that CAN do that job!
It is absolutely certain that in 5 games on that weekend that I will cross paths with at LEAST one Adeptus Astartes Army.
Now... due to all the divergent Chapters there are many kinds of Space Marines already but now with the new Detachment rules that came out in the new Space Marine Codex, there are even MORE combinations that they can come out with.
But let's start with the Army Rule. Whether you are a stoic Imperial Fist or a wild Space Wolf, the Oath of Moment is something that all the Adeptus Astartes can use.
Simply put at the start of your Command Phase, pretty much the first thing you do every turn, you select one unit in your opponent's army.
Until your next Command Phase everything in your army that is an Astartes gets to re-roll the to Hit rolls against that target.
It is very certain that this is used against something that the Space Marine player wants to kill.
Either it is in his way or he is most afraid of this unit. Or, an alternative would suggest that he is about to commit plenty of his attacks into this unit and thus to respond to the first attack with a defensive ploy of some sort is completely logical.
In my last game it was Astartes vs Astartes. My opponent went first and selected my Land Raider as the oath target.
The moment my opponent started shooting at the Land Raider, I used the Smoke Stratagem.
And thus my Land Raider only took 5 wounds after shooting much of his army at this one target!
So while this is a very useful tool. It must be understood what is going to happen when you call for the destruction of a specific unit!
It is worth mentioning that in combinations with certain units the Oath of Moment ability is useless while in other hand, some units work really when when paired up with the faction rule.
Example of bad:
Ballistus Dreadnought.
Because this Dreadnought for get free re-rolls against any unit that is not under half strength. So you can reserve those shots for a target that is possibly NOT the target with Oath of Moment.
Meanwhile a Razorback with a Twin-linked Lascannon is great with the Oath since that gives you the Re-Roll to Hit and thn the Twin Linked gives you a re-roll to Wound as well! This this becomes very reliable.
That's all I have time for tonight. Time to go sleep.
Tomorrow we will study the various Space Marine Detachments.
