Curator Cat Wonders: Will Declaring Our Posts "AI Free" Become the "New Normal?"

in #hive-189742last year

Greetings, Fabulous Felines and Hoomans of Hivelandia and surrounding communities!

I hope this Friday night is treating everyone well!

Catching the last of the evening rays...

We've had another lovely sunny day here, and it led to yet another cat photo session. Later in the afternoon the Daughter-Hooman and Son-Hooman arrived from Seattle because it is soon going to be the Mom-Hooman's birthday!

I love me a good party, with lots of opportunities to chase ribbon around!

The Artificial Intelligence Question...

Anyway, as we were starting to pick photos for this blog post, I got to thinking about something I've increasingly been noticing around our community: It seems more and more long-time community members — and especially those using their own photos — are including a statement that their post is "Proudly AI Free."

As the debate about the ongoing development of artificial intelligence and its inevitable influence on everything we do continues, we also have our own individual opinions about whether or not artificial intelligence has a place in the creation of personal blog posts in a community such as Hive.

In most cases, AI is still fairly easy to spot but how do we feel about its use?

Moreover, there is the question of whether or not a content creator deserves to be rewarded for creating content that actually isn't (strictly speaking) their creation. You could argue that AI generated content does involve the alleged content creator submitting an original idea, but even so...

Anyway, I know that all our photographs are original and real and our own, and all our texts — including the bits that are somewhat mangled because a cat walked on the keyboard — are original and created by biological entities rather than AI.

After thinking about it for a bit — and talking it over with the Dad-Hooman — I've decided that we are going to start including an "AI Free" statement on all the Curator Cat posts. Maybe that feels a bit like overkill to some, but I'd rather leave no doubt as to the origins of what we create here!

I might add that every now and then we do apply some art filters and Photoshop brushes to images... but that has always been clearly noted with each image... because it means we are actually "playing with art."

I suppose there are those who would make the argument that anybody could add an "AI free" statement regardless of what their content is and that's the point at which we run into a much broader discussion as to the degree of integrity any one contributor might have... or not have.

Not really interested in splitting hairs over that part (although we do have LOTS of extra cat hair around here, should anyone need it!), for now, we are just adding a little extra line to all posts.

Meanwhile, I hope everyone has had a great week and we look forward to hopefully seeing you again tomorrow for Caturday!

Love Cats? Get Involved in Hive's Cat Communties!

If you're a cat lover and often/sometimes post pictures or other content that includes your feline friends, why not become an active part of Hive's growing Cat Communities?

These are some of the more active Cat Communities — why not join them ALL? Many of the allow you to share your cat posts, even if you started at a different community!

HiveCats by @curatorcat is a central "gathering place" for cat content on Hive; promoting the use of the #hivecats tag for feline content!

Cat Snaps by @manorvillemike is a place to post pictures of your cats when you don't have a whole lot to say beyond just sharing your cute photos!

Caturday by @saboin is a community where we get to celebrate posts relating to Saturday — aka "Caturday" — our own special day!

Cat Photos by @andrarchy is a "mixed use" cat content community; posts can be just photos or longer, as long as the subject is CATS!

Cats by @captainklaus (and Sissi!) is another "general" cat content community.

There are a number of other feline communities listed on Hive, but I am not sharing them for now as they have not had any activity (by their Admins OR users) since the Steem/Hive fork. Updates as they become available!

I have noticed the "AI free" notes too. I even used it myself a few times, but more like a teaser :)
If someone wants to cheat, they will cheat anyway, with or without the mention. Just as some people say "I took this photo..." and it turns out it was lifted from someone on Instagram :p

including the bits that are somewhat mangled because a cat walked on the keyboard

More of those bits please :D

Indeed, there are always going to be people who cheat, no matter what steps we take to stop it. In a sense, that's what bothers me a bit about the whole AI thing.

=^..^=

I am very wary of AI and am afraid that more bad things would turn out than good things via AI. I would find it very difficult distinguish between AI essay and a man-made one!

I suppose Hoomans have always tried to invent shortcuts for everything... but I am not sure this particular shortcut is a good one, particularly in the context of a community like Hive.

=^..^=

This is food for thought. I know when I read I want to know what another individual human (or cat) thinks, not just an amalgamation of machine learning. While AI can recognize patterns and such, it still does not have a soul. I am glad to not be teaching English any more--plagiarism is going to an entirely new level now. !BBH

Yes, I can imagine this will present a whole new set of challenges for the teachers. Wow... wouldn't have any idea how one will even stop such a thing in the classroom!

I’m not a fan of the AI free notes, and especially the Proudly AI free ones. I think it’s because using them seems to suggest that the standard for posting content nowadays is to post AI generated content. Plus it kind of reminds me of the way a lot of people use Proud to be American stickers in a haughty, antagonistic sort of way.

I’m not saying this to split hairs or judge. I’m just sharing my personal opinion here.

It seems like adding a 100% written and produced by (me) note would work just as well, or even adding a note to one’s blog banner (which most people probably wouldn’t ever see) instead of every post would be another way to tackle the issue.

Well, in my opinion, that's a silly, vain and useless discussion. AI is no more than another computer/digital "tool" to help us write and create our texts and ideas with a better grammar and orthography. Absolutely similar as using the grammar corrector of Word Office or even using online translators like Google Translate, DeepL and many others. Which a huge majority around here use anyway.

So, how is it that those "others computer tools" are not forbidden, punished, excommunicated, ostracised and seen in a bad shade to create "original" content that could be rewarded by the purist grammar dictators and "curators" of the Hive blockchain? Could it simply be because they don't have the alleged "infallible tools" to detect and identify when these other sorts of AIs have been used?

So if someone goes to chatGPT and asks for a 1000 word essay on some subject, takes the result to Hive, posts it and declares "I wrote this," you'd be OK with that?

My un-ease with it is similar to my unease with cheat scripts and bots in games... it stops being about who is the best player and becomes about who has the best script. What's the purpose of even participating?

=^..^=

takes the result to Hive, posts it and declares "I wrote this," you'd be OK with that?

That's the thing. No one needs to declare anything. You just post your shit and that synderesis and "common sense" reign free.

What's the purpose of even participating?

The best purpose of participate is just doing your thing without you having to give a damn what everyone else is doing. You don't have why to feel like you're competing with anyone. And if you do, then find better cheat scripts and bots to beat them in your own mind game.
