Worldbuilding Weekend Prompt #74 - Civil War

in #hive-1910382 months ago

Welcome to the next in an ongoing series of writing prompts in the Worldbuilding community !

I'm aiming to post one of these each Sunday - sorry this one is a day late, I was away for the weekend. They aren't a replacement for the excellent daily prompts from @worldbuilding they're just an extra opportunity if you have a writing itch you want to scratch. 😀

The prompt this week is - Civil War

I thought I'd go topical with this one ! Human history is filled with civil wars. They can be defined as an armed conflict between organised groups within a single society.

The first civil wars recorded are from the First Intermediate Period in Ancient Egypt, but at that time the concept of statehood wasn't fully formed and it's hard to differentiate between a civil war and a state separating into the component parts from which it had recently formed. The last few centuries have been full of civil wars, and most recently (as in, just two days ago) it's just possible that we narrowly avoided what could have been history's first nuclear civil war.

Tell me about a civil war in your setting ? What was the spark that turned diplomacy and disagreement into armed conflict ? Who are the leaders, and what interests do they represent ? How is the war being fought, and what do the armed forces look like ? Have foreign powers (or other groups) intervened directly or indirectly ? Is the war still ongoing, and if so, why ? Or has it ended, in which case how ? What has it cost the armies and civilians of both sides, and how is the society at the end different from what went before ?

Just to add a bit of spice to things, the two entries I most like (and are linked in comments to this post, so I can find them !) that are posted by midnight (GMT) next Saturday will each get a prize of one Hive SBI.

This link will take you to the FAQ where you can read more about Hive SBI - it's a project I thoroughly support because it gives both the donor and winner a steady trickle of passive income paid out in the form of upvotes on posts.

Civil wars can make for some rich stories for worldbuilding. It usually challenge societies and change their histories in complex ways. Great piece brother you're always the best at this

Thank you ! I try to come up with prompts that inspire people to write interesting stories - some hit, some miss, lol.

It's harder in the summer for sure when you, me, and @killerwot are all doing summer stuff :P thank goodness we've got a few new eyes on these!
