I think the trend was just starting in the 90s to spoil kids and treat them like royalty, I still remember the mantra, kids should be seen and not heard! Treating them was the exception and not the norm..

Kids are kids and such be treated as kids, not as young adults. Clear rules and boundaries and clear actions if they are crossed provide a good clear framework, something to hold on to. It does not have to be the; "because I say so" world as well but there are limits for a reason.
But what concerns me most is that parents nowadays work a lot. Or at least spend many hours away from their kids and when at home they are on their phone, even when they take their kids to sports or the playground.

I lived my teenage years in the 80's and it was a hell of a lot different for kids in 90's and forward. Kids became more spoiled but they also ended up with helicopter parents and couldn't go out on their own anymore. In the 80's we'd be out riding bikes or hiking all day. It was great, kids can't do that anymore though!
Yeah, I think there was a huge difference between the decades too. I mean in the 80s i spent much time outside running on train tracks and getting into all sorts of mischief. I was actually ran over by a car going to the park near the end of the street and my parents were nowhere to be found. They just let us outside and do what we wanted. In the local shops we had a "tab" for ordering sweets each day too!! The 90s were more my teenage years.
