When we were kids and teenagers, we all craved adulthood, mainly because of the freedom that comes with it.
I can remember wanting to make certain decisions for myself.
What kinds of decisions were they?
They were simple ones like dress choices, shoes, and hairstyles. Then it felt like I could handle anything because I wasn’t exposed to the other side of life.
All I wanted was to grow up quickly.
I remember praying so much to pass JAMB so I could start living alone and experience Uni life (the type I see in movies).
Seeing happy adults every day and the way they looked peaceful and knowledgeable was very attractive to me. Adulthood looked so interesting until I became one.
Permit me to say that age only makes up 50% of the adult title; the other 50% comes from identity. This comprises how you handle yourself, how you react to situations, and how you make decisions. Adulthood, to me, means knowing who you are and the blocks you are made of.
Adulthood isn't a simple journey; it comes with a lot of hurdles, even for the rich.
The songs from these artists, who stays in different parts of the world, explain how chaotic the transition from childhood to adulthood can be.
The first is a song titled "EASTSIDE" by Benny Blanco, Halsey and Khalid. It talks about our life as teenagers when we love to have fun, hang out, and make a lot of friends. Then, in adulthood, we begin to feel the pressure for growth and self-improvement. We want to be better people at all costs and create a brighter future.
Physically, we begin to pay bills and work hard for money—something we had no idea about during our childhood.
The second song is titled "Adulthood Anthem" by Ladé, a popular Nigerian artist. This song brought her to the limelight due to how relatable it is to Nigerians and other developing countries.

Lade sang about what adulthood means to the average Nigerian citizen.
It is a stage where you have become so independent that you can’t ask your parents for money. You can’t depend on friends either because they’ll say they don’t have any…
However, amidst all the chaos of adulthood lies the interesting part of life. It is the time when we learn from our experiences and those of others. It is the time when we explore the world, look for what it can offer, and how we can make the most of those opportunities.
It is the time when we laugh, cry, and intentionally make fun of ourselves. To me, it is interesting, and sometimes I do wonder if animals do experience this wave too. Lol
Adulthood is not a scam; rather, it is an interesting journey. I have also come to realize that adulthood comes with the gift of quality humans.
I wanted to experience adulthood, but what I didn’t want were the struggles that come with it. Adults have to pay for almost everything—big or small, in kind or cash. They struggle to create a balance among many responsibilities, feel pressure, and recognize their enemies.
"We can do anything if we put our minds to it." From EASTSIDE.
As adults, we can make changes in our lives. We have strong and resilient minds to start over again after failing.
We accept that life comes with challenges and we strive to overcome them.
The best thing for an adult to do is to be happy. Happiness can’t be postponed to later days because adulthood is a journey. The problems are never-ending, so we enjoy the little achievements while we work toward the bigger ones.
Adulthood is not a scam. It is the time when we discover ourselves and make the most of our existence in the world…
