Old Friends.

Every regular person is busy doing something they see as beneficial to their lives. As such, people barely have time to keep in touch with family and even friends by extension. I am inarguably guilty of this and for a moment, I forgot how therapeutic and fun it is to be with an old friend.

A friend recently got back from an inevitable journey around the world and having a physical conversation with the friend–John–was really fun. I got to hear all about the adventures, trials and tribulations that accompany leaving one's hometown to an entirely different geographical area.

This however is not usually the case with friends that I recently just made. Making new “friends'' can be extremely exciting but in comparison to old friends, they are basically bare; no old memories, no escapades, nothing. New friends are amazing to have around as new memories can always be made but for some reason, old memories usually stick better.

I remember when we(myself and an old friend) were still transitioning from childhood to teenhood. It felt like things weren't running smoothly for us. After about an hour or two of discussing and trying to find the root of our problems (which we still didn't find,) we finally settled with making a paper box with written words of affirmation for solace. We planned to pick out a piece to read each day. I still have the box but without the words of affirmation:)

I have been friends with John for over fifteen years and I could literally ride on a bike with my eyes closed to his doorstep. It just reminds me of the essence of having good and industrious people in our circle. This goes without saying that the people in our circle or the people we tag as friends have a major role to play in the way we turn out. If a person's friend is successful then definitely it would be a stimulant to also be successful.

Additionally, nobody probably knows us like old friends do. There are certain things that I probably wouldn't explain to a new friend because subconsciously, I expect them to know. Ninety percent of the time, they don't know because obviously they do not live in my head but with a slight raise of my eyebrow or twist of my mouth, an old friend would effortlessly sense that something is going on and no, I didn't explain anything to them either. The old friends only read the signals because they have been around for a longer period.

"There’s nothing like old friends because you can't make old friends.” ~Ben Rector.

This brings me to the introduction of a very interesting piece of music “Old Friends'' by Ben Rector. The song is a nostalgic and emotional piece that reflects on memories of old friends and the importance of keeping in touch with them. In this piece, Ben recollects a few of his childhood memories and he goes ahead to say that he's certainly got some new friends now but old friends would always be gems✨
