I am one of those people who reward themselves for any reason. In other words, I congratulate myself as soon as I step out of my comfort zone.
This concept of a "comfort zone" is something I discovered early on by reading self-development articles on Google, and later through a few books. It is, therefore, deeply ingrained in me. I know that to move forward, it’s a boundary I must regularly cross. In fact, I feel a certain discomfort when I don’t. Perhaps that’s the downside: a sense of unease I didn’t know before understanding this concept.
But let’s get back to the point. I wanted to share a small achievement here. It’s the first time I’ve worked on the electricity of a house.
Now, no, it wasn’t major electrical work, but it did require a few skills I didn’t have yet:
- Handling an electrical panel;
- Buying a light fixture;
- Changing a light bulb;
- Stripping wires.
Yes, it’s really basic. And yet, even though I had already installed an off-grid solar system in a converted van three years ago, I had never worked with 220V.
It all started from there. With @altheana, we’ve been living in our new home for almost two months, and we were tired of seeing this as our ceiling light:
We knew the local hardware store sold chandeliers. So, we went there. We also needed to buy curtain rods. But the ones we wanted were out of stock. On the way, I was tempted by this machine:
Since I want to get into woodworking and construction, a circular saw is a basic tool. If we hadn’t stayed 30 minutes in the store, I might not have put it back. But after holding it for a long time and seeing its price, I finally decided to leave it on the shelf. Our finances are tight at the moment: between several ongoing projects and other big expenses coming up, this pleasure purchase will have to wait. But it’s only postponed!
So, we returned home with our new chandelier, without curtain rods and without the circular saw.
The old setup was really dirty and, on top of that, no longer up to standard. In fact, the entire electrical installation of the house is outdated. It’s a project we’ll have to tackle sooner or later. Maybe we won’t be the ones to do it. It will depend on the time we have available. We’ll need to get some training first.
Inside the new chandelier's cover, there were several components: the wires, of course, but also a small box containing two terminal blocks. The wire was too long, so I shortened it.
When you hang a new chandelier, the goal isn’t very complicated to understand: you need to connect the chandelier wires to the ones coming from the ceiling.
There were two wires coming from the ceiling: the live and the neutral. Basically, the positive and the negative. The first step was to strip them to expose the copper, just enough for the copper part to fit into the terminal block without sticking out. There’s a tool for this, but since I didn’t have it, I used a knife. It requires a bit of patience to avoid cutting the wire, but it’s doable.
Once the wires were properly stripped, I secured them in the terminal block. I then repeated the process for the ceiling wires, making sure they were tightly fastened. I closed everything up in the white box to insulate the connections.
Back to the electrical panel to turn the power back on, and tadaaa:
All that’s left is to find a hook to lift the chandelier and hide the cable between the ceiling and the black cover. The store was closed, and honestly, we didn’t feel like going back right away. But the essential is done, and it really changes the room!
I know it’s not much. But when you accomplish something by yourself, it works, and it improves your daily life, you feel real pride. Little by little, you gain confidence and realize you’re capable of pushing yourself. You just need a bit of motivation, a little bit of learning, to think about how you’re going to proceed, and most importantly, to take action. Only action can truly teach you. Nothing else.

Je fais partie de ceux qui se récompensent pour un oui ou pour un non. Autrement dit, je me félicite dès que je sors de ma zone de confort.
Cette notion de "zone de confort", je l’ai découverte très tôt, en lisant des articles de développement personnel sur Google, puis plus tard à travers quelques livres. Elle est donc profondément ancrée en moi. Je sais que, pour avancer, c’est une frontière que je dois régulièrement franchir. D'ailleurs, je ressens un certain mal-être lorsque je ne le fais pas. C’est peut-être le revers de la médaille : un inconfort que je ne connaissais pas avant cette notion.
Mais revenons à nos moutons. Je voulais partager ici un petit accomplissement. C’est la première fois que je touche à l’électricité d’une maison.
Alors non, ce ne sont pas de gros travaux d’électricité, mais cela demandait quelques compétences que je n’avais pas encore :
- Manipuler un tableau électrique ;
- Acheter un luminaire ;
- Changer une ampoule ;
- Dénuder des fils.
Oui, c’est vraiment la base. Et pourtant, même si j’avais déjà installé un système solaire autonome dans un fourgon aménagé il y a 3 ans, je n’avais jamais travaillé avec du 220V.
Tout est parti de là. Avec @altheana, ça fait presque deux mois que nous vivons dans notre nouveau logement, et nous en avions assez de voir ça comme plafonnier :
Nous savions que le magasin de bricolage du coin proposait des lustres. Nous y sommes donc allés. Nous devions aussi acheter des tringles à rideaux. Mais celles que nous voulions n’étaient pas en stock. En chemin, j’ai été tenté par cette machine :
Moi qui veux me lancer dans le travail du bois et la construction, une scie circulaire est un outil basique. Si nous n’étions pas restés 30 minutes dans le magasin, je ne l’aurais peut-être pas reposée. Mais après l’avoir longuement tenue et vu son prix, je me suis finalement résigné à la remettre en rayon. Nos finances sont serrées en ce moment : entre plusieurs projets en cours et d’autres grosses dépenses à venir, cet achat plaisir attendra. Mais ce n’est que partie remise !
Nous sommes donc rentrés à la maison avec notre nouveau lustre, sans barre de rideau et sans scie circulaire.
L’ancien système était vraiment sale et, en plus, plus aux normes. D’ailleurs, c’est toute l’installation électrique de la maison qui est dépassée. C’est un chantier que nous devrons aborder un jour ou l’autre. Ce n'est peut-être pas nous qui nous en chargerons. Ca dépendra du temps que nous aurons à disposition. Il faudra d'abord nous former.
Dans le cache du nouveau lustre, il y avait plusieurs éléments : les câbles, bien sûr, mais aussi un boîtier contenant deux dominos. Le câble était trop long, je l’ai donc raccourci.
Quand vous accrochez un nouveau lustre l'objectif n'est pas très compliqué à comprendre : il faut raccorder les fils du lustre à ceux qui sortent du plafond.
Les fils du plafond étaient au nombre de deux : la phase et le neutre. En gros, le positif et le négatif. La première étape a été de les dénuder pour libérer le cuivre, juste assez pour que la partie cuivrée entre dans le domino sans dépasser. Il existe un outil pour ça, mais ne l’ayant pas, j’ai utilisé un couteau. Ca demande un peu de patience pour éviter de couper le fil, mais c’est faisable.
Une fois les fils correctement dénudés, je les ai fixés dans le domino. J’ai ensuite répété l’opération pour les fils du plafond, en m’assurant qu’ils étaient bien serrés. J’ai refermé le tout dans le boîtier blanc pour isoler les connexions.
Retour au tableau électrique pour remettre le courant, et tadaaa :
Il ne nous reste plus qu’à trouver un crochet pour remonter le lustre et cacher le câble entre le plafond et le cache noir. Le magasin était fermé et, honnêtement, on n’avait pas envie d’y retourner tout de suite. Mais l’essentiel est fait et ça change la pièce !
Je sais que ce n’est pas grand-chose. Mais quand vous réussissez quelque chose par vous-même, que cette chose fonctionne et que cette chose améliore votre quotidien, vous ressentez une vraie fierté. Petit à petit, on gagne en confiance et on se rend compte qu’on est capable de se dépasser. Il suffit d'avoir un peu envie, de légèrement se former, de réfléchir à la manière dont vous allez procéder et surtout, de passer à l'action. Il n'y a que l'action qui peut réellement vous former. Rien d'autre.
