Yesterday, I stopped at the garden of one of the residents in Bireun, Aceh. who is a person I know, the visit was just by chance, because I almost every day to walk around and want to see and enjoy the natural atmosphere that is so peaceful. But by chance I stopped at a place or garden belonging to my friend, and coincidentally he was harvesting bitter melon. Luckily for me there, I was able to see the process of harvesting the bitter melon, and have a little chat about the plants that he takes care of.
At first I did not believe that he was the one who worked or took care of this garden, but because I saw it in person, I gave my friend a thumbs up, because this garden is quite large he can work very neatly. Although occasionally he is assisted by his wife to help with the work, but it is not optimal, I think he is a hard worker who is quite successful.
He told me that the cultivation of bitter melon is quite easy, the maintenance is not so complicated. But there is one thing that is most important here and a bit draining, namely the support poles for the bitter melon tree, and that only needs to be done once, at the beginning of the work, and can last for several years later. Furthermore, it is just a normal planting process and is very easy to do by anyone, and the yield is also quite large.
Bitter gourd is a plant or vegetable that people rarely cultivate, maybe because people think that its care is so complicated that it makes people think twice, but that's not really the case. There are certain ways that must be considered, and if you already know it then these things are very easy to do.
When I came there the bitter melon was not the first time my friend had cultivated it, this has been the number of times he has planted it, it can be seen from the old support poles.
How long is the bitter melon harvest?
If expressed from the beginning of the nursery until the harvest arrives, it is about 2-3 months, and what is special in this case is the very long harvest period, it is about 4-5 months of harvest. This is what is meant as a big advantage in this case, because of the long harvest period.
How much it costs?
The normal price is around IDR 4,500 per kilogram or the equivalent of $0.3 per kilogram. On average, if the bitter gourd is rare, the price will be even higher up to $0.5 per kilogram.
For one bitter melon weighs up to 0.25 ounces, and to reach 1 kilograms, the average must have 4 pieces of bitter melon.
For my friend's garden, the average weight he gets at harvest is up to 200 kilograms, and the money he earns is quite a lot, because 1 day later the bitter melon fruit can be harvested again, and until the tree dies.
The bitter melon tree that my friend has is quite young, he said, because it only lasts about 3 months or more, and then the bitter melon tree will cover all the supporting poles when it reaches the age of about 6 months. You can see in the photos I got there.
