I love that song! You want the french version? Man I don't know if I got the skills!

It's more acting than singing. Did you know that the singer Jacques Brel was very shy and sang showing is back to the audience?

Did you know that this song was supposed to be a satyre how crazy we can be for love sometimes, and pathetic when begging someone to stay, but people actually took it as a love song?

Crazy shit man!

Either the French version, or a combination like McKuen did on his album that I purchased in the 1960's.

You reminded me about that 'back to the audience' thing Brel did, but didn't know it was originally a satire piece. What I do remember is, McKuen has stated (back then) that the song was written in collaboration with Brel. He also had a book published 'Listen to the Warm' with all the songs and poems from the album in printed form (Which I also have)

I attended a one man show by McKuen in NYC. When the performance was over, he sat on the edge of the stage, very relaxed and cordial, interacting with any audience members choosing to speak with him.

If you want to check out a more guitarish version, Neil Diamond might be worthwhile to check out...

Ciao, monsieur 😎

Thanks brother I'll keep in mind the Neil Diamond version too! Pretty gnarly what you described with the McKuen performance in NY.
