You can be zealous for drumming and be ignorant.
Many years ago when I was trying to learn drumming by myself. I had no teacher, no phone to learn from YouTube and no guidance from anywhere.
All I knew about drumming then was that if I know how to play the normal ballad beat for worship and Makossa beat for praise I am good to go..
I used month learning them and when I finally got them I had this feeling that I am now a drummer..
Not until the day I stumbled upon Paradiddle.
The way I knew about it was very funny. I overheard one brother telling someone that "If you are a drummer, you don't know how to play paradiddle you're not a drummer."
😂On hearing that, I started sweating profusely.
Which one is paradiddle again?
I thought Makossa and ballad beat is the main thing.
I begged my elder brother to search for paradiddle for me on YouTube.
I sat down for hours watching the video and learning it, only to discover that there's more to it. I came to know that it's a Rudiment and it has brothers.
That was how I came to the lime light of rudiment.
I was ignorant thinking Makossa beat was the main deal, forgetting some vitals things.
I was zealous but ignorant..
There are alot of people who are really zealous for drumming, the passion is highly present in them. You keep wondering why you're not improving even with the passion right?
You are learning what you ought not to be learning.
You can't skip the basics of drumming and not suffer. You can't cheat drumming.
Why learn fills when you've not mastered your rudiments?
Why learn Polyrhythms when you've not mastered independence in drumming?
Why learn precision when you've not mastered your note value?
Why learn time signature when you've not mastered your note value?
You can't jump the vitals of drumming and not suffer.
Having the zeal is not enough. Are you actually learning the right thing?
Most times this ignorance comes out of lack of information. Many drummers are not informed while some are misinformed.
You will find some people playing the drums for 10yrs and not improving, if you're like this; go back to the basics of drumming cos that's the only way you can overcome that stagnation.
Always get access to the right information!
You have a smart phone, make YouTube your best friend and thank me later.
