Today I share with you four more records that I purchased recently at a local record shoppe, this time featuring hip hop records from the 90s and early 2000s... Enjoy!
Beans
"Mutescreamer"
2003
Beans is a rapper\producer most well known from his time in the Warp Records progressive electronic hip hop group, Antipop Consortium. Last I heard, he was actually living in Cleveland, where I am from. I had actually seen him before out and about at shows...but no idea if he is still around, as the music scene still seems to be a mere fraction of what it used to be... Here is a track from his first solo record, Tomorrow Right Now, also released on Warp Records. Beans is still putting out releases regularly, my homie Ay Fast produced almost half of one of his most recent albums. This track is pretty hot, I remember hearing it on a DJ Shadow live mix- I'm pretty sure it was featured on "Diminishing Returns," the Peel Tribute mix broadcast on the BBC. This is the official music video for the track.
MC Breed & DFC
"Just Kickin' It"
1991
MC Breed and Da Funk Clan were one of the first successful hip hop groups to break out of the Midwest, being from Flint Michigan\Detroit area. MC Breed would have a few hits in the early 90s, notably collapsing on songs with Too $hort and 2pac. DFC was a group featuring MC Breed's cousin and would cease putting out music by the late 90s. MC Breed died of kidney failure in 2008. Here is another music video made for the song...
Ras Kass
"Rassassination"
1998
Ras Kass is a West Coast MC coming out of the mid to late 90s, this being off his second album from 1998. He was signed to Priority Records, but his third album, Van Gogh, would end up getting shelved. He is still putting out releases, with quite the amount of entries on his Discogs page. I first heard him on the classic World Famous Beat Junkies Vol 2 mixtape on that Xzibit track "3 Card Molly" although I missed my chance at seeing him perform live a few years ago.
Rakaa-Iriscience
"Caution"
2000
Up next is a track from a Rakaa-Iriscience, known as one third of the Dilated Peoples, a West Coast 90s\2000s act that was on the verge of blowing up, but never really made it to mainstream successs, although they did four albums with Capitol Records. This one is from a split single with Reflection Eternal (DJ Hi-Tek and Talib Kweli) off The Unbound Project compilation, an album that looks very interesting, with a very socially-conscious looking lineup of tracks and artists. This particular cut features scratches by DJ Babu and Production by Miles from the Breakestra, an excellent funk live band that recreates famous Breakbeats and soul songs, seamlessly playing then together like one big mixtape.
Thats all for today's installment, thank you for reading, I hope you found some new head nodding, party-rocking favorites, or at least learned something new...I hope you liked my post!
