Blue Soul - Joe Louis Walker - My Perspective

in #hive-1938163 years ago

I am going to depart from the jazz vein and delve into some of my favorite blues artists. Joe Louis Walker is one of the handful of blues players to open up the genre while still holding on to traditional blues values.. This album is the most varied in terms of styles that I have heard from him and is my favorite. He has a great gospel tinged bluesy voice and plays guitar very well. The first song on the album, Prove Your Love, starts out strong and never lets up. The gospel inspired fade takes it even higher. T.L.C. has bit of Hendrix and funk in the mix and a lot of swagger. Personal Baby has a great arrangement and is a nicely nuanced declaration of love. Alligator has some great slide guitar and a unique set up as far as the guitar interplay and rhythm section go. The lyrics are also hilarious in the boastful over the top blues tradition of Seventh Son and Hoochie Coochie Man. Dead Sea has a great rhythm section with a swirling organ accompaniment with lyrics explaining how he was saved by a woman's love. The last song, I'll Get to Heaven on my Own is in the Delta slide blues mold with lyrics that reject the Bible thumping preacher man but embrace personal responsibility for your own spiritual awakening. The entire album is excellent. Hope you enjoy it.
