The eras and music/ band favourites that I have grown with are mostly international as opposed to home South African grown.
However, in my view, we do have/ have had many amazing local artists/ bands that should be right up there on the world stage but sadly had their wings clipped by multiple external factors that were none of their own doing. So today I am going to concentrate on local artists as opposed to international....
My favourite South African artist/ band must be Johnny Clegg and his band Juluka. @jasperdick did a blog on them yesterday so I will leave them out of my mix today.

In 1994 South Africa went through a huge shift with the first democratic government under Nelson Mandela being elected.
A year later South Africa was allowed to take part in the Rugby World Cup for the first time ever and it was hosted here.
Rugby is huge here and the World Cup is a massive prestigious international event hosted in a different country once every four years.
South Africa ended up beating New Zealand in the final and the whole country literally went crazy in happiness & joint pride and it definately helped unifying the country.
The theme song for the event was "World in Union" by a South African, PJ Powers, and I think it did just as much for every South African as the win when it was played at packed stadiums for games throughout the tournament..... I still get an incredibly warm & proud feeling everytime I listen to it.
South Africa has since gone on to win the world cup in 2007 & 2019 with the same song often played in highlights and each time it has done just as much for the people of South Africa.
Music & sport are powerful on many levels.
My second choice is "My African Dream" by Vicky Sampson.
The song and video used encapsulates the spirit of South Africans and the country's natural beauty. I think any expat living abroad sheds a tear of warm home sickness every time they hear it.....
My third choice is "This Boy" by Wendy Oldfield. She released it in 1986.
It hits home with me because I relate with it due to the way I grew up (without the privileged society in its general term meaning) and it still lifts me up & motivates me every time I listen to it......
I hope you enjoyed this and thanks if you made it this far :)
Thanks to @ablaze and @tengolotodo for hosting this & steering me here.
