A cordial greeting to the #Music community. I am pleased to share my trumpet performance «If I Were a Rich Man», a song from the 1964 musical "Fiddler on the Roof." This piece of music was composed by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick. The song is more than just a fantasy about wealth. The lyrics are witty and humorous, they tell us about human desires and aspirations. Although we all long for a better life for ourselves and our family, wealth is not the answer to all problems. In the end, the most important thing in life is family and love. I love the variety of musical techniques to create contrast, such as dynamic changes, register changes, and tempo changes. The time changes surprised me, especially when I was reading in 4/4 and it changed to 2/4. It has influences in the tradition of klezmer music, which is a type of Eastern European Jewish folk music. A few years ago I had the opportunity to see one of the films for a University assignment, this was the Norman Jewison version (1971).

No matter how much material wealth we obtain in this life, those things are temporary and of little importance compared to the eternal blessings that come from following God's commandments and living a righteous life. It is worthless to invest your life to accumulate wealth, and then you die, and someone else enjoys it. I love Fiddler on the Roof, even though they live in poverty, they find wealth in their faith, their family, and their community. Despite the difficulties they face, they hold on to their values and find joy in the simple things in life. Now hard work and initiative are important to achieve financial success. If the goal of wealth is to serve others, help and build, it will always be worth it. The extremes would be excessive work and obsession with wealth. That is why we must seek a healthy balance and focus. I hope you enjoy my interpretation. Happy weekend to all.

If I Were a Rich Man

Oh dear Lord, you made many, many poor people. I realize, of course, that it's no shame to be poor. But it's no great honor either. So what would have been so terrible if I had a small fortune?

If I were a rich man
Ya ba dibba dibba dibba dibba dibba dibba dum
All day long I'd biddy biddy bum
If I were a wealthy man
I wouldn't have to work hard
Ya ba dibba dibba dibba dibba dibba dibba dum
If I were a biddy biddy rich
Idle-diddle-didle-didle man

I'd build a big tall house with rooms by the dozen
Right in the middle of the town
A fine tin roof with real wooden floors below
There would be one long staircase just going up
And one even longer coming down
And one more leading nowhere, just for show

I'd fill my yard with chicks and turkeys and geese
And ducks for the town to see and hear
Squawking just as noisily as they can
And each loud bird noises
Would land like a trumpet on the ear
As if to say, "Here lives a wealthy man"
Oy
If I were a rich man
Ya ba dibba dibba dibba dibba dibba dibba dum
All day long I'd biddy biddy bum
If I were a wealthy man
I wouldn't have to work hard
Ya ba dibba dibba dibba dibba dibba dibba dum
If I were a biddy biddy rich
Idle-diddle-didle-didle man

I see my wife, my Golde, looking like a rich man's wife
With a proper double chin
Supervising meals to her heart's delight
I see her putting on airs and strutting like a peacock
Oh, what a happy mood she's in
Screaming at the servants day and night
Screaming

The most important men in town would come to fawn on me
They will ask me to advise them
Like a Solomon the Wise
"If you please, Reb Tevye..."
"Pardon me, Reb Tevye..."
Posing problems that would cross a rabbi's eyes
Ya-da-dee-da-da, ya-dee-da-da, ya-dee-da-da-da
And it won't make one bit of difference
If I answer right or wrong
When you're rich, they think you really know
If I were rich, I'd have the time that I lack
To sit in the synagogue and pray
And maybe have a seat by the eastern wall
And I'd discuss the holy books with the learned men
Seven hours every day
And that would be the sweetest thing of all
Oy

If I were a rich man
Ya ba dibba dibba dibba dibba dibba dibba dum
All day long I'd biddy biddy bum
If I were a wealthy man
I wouldn't have to work hard
Ya ba dibba dibba dibba dibba dibba dibba dum
Lord, who made the lion and the lamb
You decreed I should be what I am
Would it spoil some vast eternal plan
If I were a wealthy man?
