Earlier when I came across the Minimalist community, I found it extremely difficult to relate to the perception. I once said to someone “I don’t think I am a minimalist” but then I found out that I could relate to being a minimalist by my mindset but I was having some serious setbacks about getting into the lifestyle. At a point, my mind was already drawn to being a minimalist and I had to adapt to certain things, that way working on the various setbacks I was having.
I am certain that the majority of minimalists had some challenges when they were contemplating getting into the minimalist lifestyle. The lifestyle of a minimalist seems simple and easy to practice but these challenges are sometimes difficult to overcome because these acts have been part of our daily lives and we are changing it for something better.
I have spoken about how terrific I was at spending. I buy things on impulse. People say you only spend money or buy things when you go out, I think with me, I could stay home and buy whatever I want. I would see a nice bag and I would want to get it, I would want to get anything my eyes see and my mind wants it. I spend on things that weren’t important to me if I had to place them on a scale of priorities.
Most days, I would say I have nothing to wear out and proceed to get new clothes, but then I look into my wardrobe and I find out I have lots of clothes that I have worn just ones and some that I haven’t even worn at all. I just keep buying and stacking up the clothes. This was one challenge I was dealing with before getting into the minimalist lifestyle. Honestly, it wasn’t easy for me to stop impulse-buying. I had to work on myself. So I get just the things I need.
I would sometimes, write out important things I need to get and go over the list over again, so I do not spend on things that are not useful then.
Another challenge that I had to deal with was Decluttering of my space. When I got to understand the Minimalist lifestyle, I found out that decluttering is one healthy thing about the Minimalist lifestyle. This means getting rid of things you don’t need to create space for important things. Growing up, I always had an attachment to my belongings. Most times when my mom would say sort out the things you don’t need so we can either throw them away or give them out. I would end up saying that I still need everything.
I had things in my closet, such as shoes, clothes, and even books but then I found it difficult to throw them out. No matter how hard I have worked on this challenge. I still get to keep things that I know are not important but because I have an attachment to my items, I keep them around. Good thing I am working on this and I could see some changes around my surroundings.
The Minimalist lifestyle is all about simplifying and at first it might seem difficult but as one goes on, it becomes easier and a peaceful lifestyle. I am still trying to find my way through these challenges and become fierce in my minimalist lifestyle.
