Greetings!
Last week, I finally decided to take the bold step of transforming one of the small spaces I used for my work. This has been a burden to me for a very long time. I have had the mind to do it, but because of the unnecessary attention it would attract from the landlord, I have been using it as it was. Each time customers visited and pointed out how poor the workspace looked, it struck me so hard and got me thinking for days. I have heard them say I'm being stingy and so many other things but they didn't just understand the situation.
Look at the situation:
The wall was not plastered and looked so old, like the wall of an abandoned building. The top was not covered with a ceiling, so one could see the dirty wooden woods on the roof. The landlord is the type that, once he notices any work done on his building, does not care whether it is beautifying his house or not—he would increase the rent. So I was actually trying to avoid the increment of the rent. Mind you, the place is actually a small space, not a full building
The look on the wall and top
Defying all odds, I decided to work on it last week in a very economical way so that I would not spend too much.
Firstly, using PVC would have given the roof a fine beauty, but using a board would achieve the same effect, and the board is proven to last just as long as PVC. So, yeah, I went for the board. I bought wood, nails, and then called a guy who specializes in the work. We practically did it together—yes, I was helping him out by supplying and holding items and tools.
After fixing the board(ceiling) and during plastering
For the plastering, we also went with a minimalist approach. Instead of buying a trip or a half-trip of sand, which is very costly, we decided to gather sand from the roadside, pack it with a wheelbarrow, and that was what we used plus a bag of cement.
After the work was done, the space looked completely transformed and beautified. Maybe it is just my eyes playing tricks on me, but I see the space as more spacious compared to how it was before.
Not only that, but the nagging thoughts and heaviness in my mind that it had been giving me finally disappeared, and I have not felt this relieved in a very long time. The praises I have been getting from people, compared to the odd words before, have been a real soul-lifter.
Although the landlord is yet to see it because he does not stay around, whatever action he takes once he learns about it, my mind is fully prepared to deal with it this time. Deep down in my heart, I am wishing he does not increase the rent, but honestly, that is not something that is bothering me anymore.
Thanks for reading.
