A clear and organised space is something I greatly cherish. I firmly believe in the concept of “environmental influence on one’s mental health”. If your surroundings are organised and clean, your mind will likely be quite organised as well.
I have always loved deep cleaning; it gives me a sense of satisfaction and clears my mind. I just can’t wait to have my own space one day, where I can be as organised and minimalist as possible. I love spaciousness, but when we have limited space, all we can do is manage it effectively.
Some time ago, I wrote a post about how I got a new apartment close to my university. I talked about how I tried to manage the small space there.
My roommate has left for her six-month IT program. Ever since she left, I have wanted to organise the room, but I couldn’t find the time due to the back-to-back exams I had, which were quite draining.
Now that I am done with my exams, I decided to organise the room and try to create more space. It didn’t turn out perfectly as I wished it would, but it is just always nice to tidy up.
Here is how my space looked before..
This is my roommate's side. she has packed most of her belongings because she’ll be away for six months, but these are the things she left behind.
Organise with me.
The first thing I did was take everything out of the room, so I could clean properly. I didn’t just want to organise the room or clean superficially; I wanted to make sure I did a deep cleaning and every corner of the room was touched.
After sweeping, dusting, and removing any form of cobwebs, I began arranging things back into the room. I wanted to make a change in the setting (layout) but I couldn’t figure out any better arrangement. Hopefully, I figure out a better setting next time.
The only changes I made to my space were moving my bed to the other side, and adding some decor I found in my box. I made these crochet vines some time ago but never used them. I decided to hang them in the corner of my space and fortunately, they match the painting.
I also found some of my sister’s old drawings in my box. I couldn’t resist attaching them to the wall.
For my roommate’s space, I just rearranged her things to create more space. I moved the pots and some packed nylons and plastic bags to the kitchen cupboard, and I tried to fit most of the containers, bags, and stuff into one another.
I packed those spread-out containers in a bowl. I should have disposed some of those containers but since they weren’t mine, I just had to pack them all.
I didn’t really do much, but I’m glad I was able to organise things a little bit. After I was done, the air was quite dusty, so I sprayed some air freshener to add a nice scent.
I am sure I will do this again sometime and even better.
