Hello friends! @shanibeer beat me to it this year, but every year in January I do an audit to see how many clothing items I bought in the past year. This tradition started after I saw an episode of Hasan Minhaj's show where he said that in the 80s, the average American bought a dozen new clothing items per year, but in the modern era the average is 68! That's more than one a week, and really speaks to the disposable nature of the fast fashion industry. I try and focus on quality over quantity, and get pieces that will last rather than lots that will fall apart. This also works well since I don't have a ton of money to spend on clothes! Some data in memes for you before I get to my totals:
$100 per month! Cheese and crackers, no wonder the average these days is 68 new items of clothing.
Onto my numbers:
2019: 8 items
2020: 16 (counting masks as a clothing item)
2021: 3 items (counting masks)
2022: 7 items
2023: 6 items
2024: 5 items
Two thermal shirts, two pairs of underwear, and one hoodie.
That's Yuan taking Laeg on an adventure! Their colors are perfect, I had to get this one. It came from Redbubble. And I live in hoodies, so it gets a lot of wear!
So yeah, I am below even the 80s average. But I exited 2024 in dire need of a few basics as most of mine were falling apart, even though I mend. So I already hit up Levi's clearance post-xmas sale and scored a new pair of jeans for $19.90 - that's with tax, and free shipping. Woohoo! But that will count toward 2025's numbers since I just ordered them today. ;)
How many new items of clothing did you buy in 2024? Let me know in the comments, or write your own post! :)
