A few years ago, my way of dressing would make people tag me as "Sister in the Lord," with no style to it. In fact, my way of tying scarves would make you think I'm a conc spiritual union sister, hahaha. But late last year, I became used to an app and found myself always scrolling through Pinterest, saving different outfit inspirations. My aim was focused on one thing: to browse through looks that felt more mature and stylish.
For the longest time, I struggled with finding outfits that truly reflected me - who I truly am. My fashion sense is so low and many times, I'm always okay with the clothes in my wardrobe and do not want to step up. I knew I needed an upgrade with my fashion sense. If there's something I am very bad at, I cannot put outfits together to look more stylish and elegant, making me look like an old woman even in her early thirties.
I'd watched many ladies, and how they would always dress so well and would admire them. I wanted that, too. The problem was not having money to do that - It felt like I was okay in my comfort zone.
Whenever I opened my wardrobe, I would sigh and think, "Girl, you really need to step your style game up." Some of my outfits that I lack are classic tops with jeans. Sometimes, my mind wouldn't go there to get them, but I'd love it when someone put on those matches and looked more confident. I know that dresses make us look more elegant, especially ones that are worn correctly with beautiful combinations and many times, I would be like, "I have lot of clothes. But most of them aren't as stylish as I wanted.
I wanted something fresh, like jeans paired with chic tops, jumpsuits (my sister made me fall in love with this outfit), or a classic shirt and trousers combo. I wanted outfits that made me feel more elegant yet still aligned with my minimalist lifestyle. I don't want to spend excessively just because of this, but to go for quality pieces that speak of my maturity and growth.
That's why I became intentional about changing my wardrobe and for a transformation to happen. I decided to go out last weekend to a shop where they sell amazing tops and jeans, though I'd wanted some classic shirts and skirts for my new job I would be starting tomorrow while going back again in a few days to get more tops and jeans for my wardrobe. Instead of impulsively shopping for random clothes also, I began selecting beautiful fabrics (materials) to make styles with them as I worked with my designer to bring them to life.
At least with the ones I've been rocking on, which started late last year and stepping out, I notice the way people take a second look and perhaps say in their mind, "This lady is good, mehn!" That feeling? I love it. I want to go for the transformation fully, especially with a new age and journey this year.
I love well-fitted jeans so much that I have decided to have a few of them soon, and yes, I mean it. I've gotten some lovely tops (all thanks to my sister for sending them over), and I plan to add more - mindfully, of course. I don't want to take that advantage to hoard, no, I will only be careful with my selection of what aligns with my evolving style.
As part of this transformation, I'm also decluttering my wardrobe, taking away clothes that no longer fit my style or make me feel confident. Some outfits still make me look younger, and it's time to release them.
With this journey, it isn't about me chasing trends or spending excessively, but being intentional, finding outfits that I can afford while still going for quality pieces that align with my minimalist values. I can't wait to get these new outfits by the end of the month and start rocking them on, walking confidently wherever I go as they speak of my maturity and elegance.
