Old stuff

I've done a few posts in recent months on some of my old bits and pieces from childhood. 'What do you mean' says you...

Let me fill you in.

I called to my parents house a couple of months back and they weren't in. I was about to turn on my heel, but my three boys were with me and asked if they could see my old room as they like to do sometimes, and so we popped upstairs in my parents house and had a look, and we uncovered some interesting bits and pieces.

Old photos, sticker books, mementos and old equipment, including old cameras and a wireless as they were called then, we call them radios now. I got the old equipment handed down as I thought they looked really cool back in the day.

This post is about the match and racing programs I found and today it's about the match programme from Galway's 1997 hurling senior championship match against Kilkenny.

I remember this match well. Kilkenny had lost the Leinster final and so faced Galway who were young and hungry in the Quarter final.

I won't say I was overly confident ahead of the game, but I was definitely quietly confident and this confidence looked well placed as Galway out hurled Kilkenny in the first half and built up a well deserved 3-9 to 1-6 nine point lead at half-time.

Anyone who knows hurling knows that such leads can quickly evaporate in the quick and nimble game of hurling and they'll also tell you that Kilkenny teams are never beaten especially teams managed by the infamous Brian Cody. Having said all of that though a nine point lead is a lot and really should never be turned over.

In the second half, unfortunately for Galway and I, one of GAA's all time legends DJ Carey, as he so often did, produced a dazzling display which helped Kilkeeny to win by two points and Carey himself finished with a personal tally of 2-8 on the day.

The score at full time was.

KILKENNY 4-15 GALWAY 3-16

There was a minor match on that day too between Galway and Offaly, but if I'm honest, I don't remember that game as well as the senior match, and in fact I was probably still in the pub enjoying a few of these!!

Gallup??? No idea... something for cattle I assume. Lots of farmers go to hurling matches!

Last but not least, the famous Puma King boots. These were the best of the best boots back in the day. Not even Adidas Predators beat these bad boys.
