I was born in a cozy, not-so-fancy town in Romania, and despite my not-so-desperate attempts to break free from this shitty little place, I somehow always found my way back.
It’s been over seven years since I returned from Norway, and honestly, I don’t feel any pull toward any other place in the world. Nothing exerts a magnetic force strong enough to make me leave this town.
It has gotten quite noisy over the years, though—not in the way a big city is, but we probably have five times more cars than we did when I was a kid, even though the population has shrunk by half over the years.
There are way more stores, bars, and places to go than there were back in the ’90s, and the area overall feels more alive, so to speak. Especially in the summertime.
Some families have chosen to live completely off-grid, away from all this noise and the stench of globalization, and to some extent, I envy them. I enjoy being around people at times, but I’d also love to have a place where I can escape this nonsense for a few days each week.
Maybe one day. Who knows? Maybe at the end of the bull market…
I was so eager to taste the flesh of the big cities when I was a teenager. Funny how bitter it tastes now.
