Hello,
This post is my entry to the #pobphocontest organized by @friendlymoose. This week the proposed theme is ‘Gold’ and that is why I have chosen for my entry the golden angel with Egyptian tints located in a pantheon in the Cemetery of the Whale in Castro Urdiales (Cantabria-Spain).
My entry to #pobphotocontest
On several of my visits to Castro Urdiales I have been to this cemetery, not because I have a relative buried there, but because this pantheon with Egyptian iconography has always caught my attention.
Egyptian references abound throughout the pantheon. For example, the obelisk located on one of the sides of the pantheon with golden inscriptions of the name of the family to which it belongs and with a very striking golden cage.
However, the Egyptian references are not limited to the obelisk, but also include eagles at the corners of the pantheon. Golden eagles in Ancient Egypt have always been associated with the god Ra. One of the best known gods for those of us who are not experts in Egyptian deities.
The beetles are also a clear Egyptian reference. In this case, they are located on the sides of the pantheon, as if they were crypt closures. In Ancient Egypt, the scarab beetle was related to resurrection.
Something very appropriate in a Christian cemetery where people believe in the resurrection of the flesh and in eternal life.
Undoubtedly, a great work of art, this pantheon makes the cemetery of the whale one of those comments visited by almost more tourists than by relatives of the deceased who are there.
Best regards.
